Chapter 10 - The Home We Built

Six months later.
The summer sun was warm and golden over the North Shore estate. The grand gardens were in full bloom, filled with red roses, white hydrangeas, and the sweet scent of fresh-cut grass.
In the backyard, right near the edge of the manicured lawn overlooking the blue waters of Lake Michigan, a large white marquee tent had been set up for a private family celebration.
It was Lily’s eighth birthday party.
Laughter filled the afternoon air as dozens of children from Lily’s school ran across the grass, playing games, while Mateo and several off-duty Rossi security guards happily grilled burgers and hot dogs near the patio.
I stood near the wooden gazebo wearing a simple, elegant rose-colored summer dress. My skin was glowing, my posture proud and erect, a look of complete, unburdened peace on my face.
Beside me stood Leo, dressed in a casual white linen shirt and dark trousers, holding two glasses of chilled lemonade.
He handed one glass to me, his fingers gently brushing against mine.
"You look beautiful today, Beatrice," Leo said softly, his dark eyes looking at me with a warmth that had become a permanent part of our daily life.
"Thank you, Leo," I smiled, taking a sip of the sweet lemonade. "The party turned out wonderfully. Lily hasn't stopped smiling all day."
Across the lawn, eight-year-old Lily came running up the wooden steps of the gazebo, holding a large, handmade birthday card drawn in bright colored crayons.
"Bea! Daddy! Look what I made!" Lily cheered, jumping up and down in front of us.
She held up the paper.
The drawing showed a big, beautiful stone house under a bright yellow sun. Standing on the green grass outside were three figures: a tall man in a dark suit, a little girl with a bright pink ribbon in her hair, and a smiling woman in a rose-colored dress holding the little girl’s hand.
Written across the top in Lily’s neat, child-like handwriting were five simple words:
MY FAMILY AT THE ROSSI ESTATE.
Leo dropped down to one knee, looking at the drawing, his arm wrapping around Lily’s waist. "This is the best drawing you’ve ever made, sweetheart."
"Because it’s true," Lily said proudly, turning her brown eyes toward me. She reached out her small arms, wrapping them tightly around my neck. "I love you, Bea."
I knelt down beside them on the polished wood of the gazebo floor, pulling Lily close against my heart, while Leo wrapped his large, strong arm around both of us.
"I love you too, my sweet girl," I whispered, tears of pure happiness welling in my eyes. "More than words can ever say."
As the afternoon sun dipped low over the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and deep violet, I looked at the man and the little girl who had given me a real home.

I was no longer the apologetic, terrified woman who stepped aside in grocery store aisles. I was no longer the invisible housekeeper who lived in the shadows of wealthy people's cruelty.
I was Beatrice—the woman who had stood between a child and betrayal, the master of the estate, and a mother in every way that truly mattered.
