Chapter 6 - The Tiger in the Dark

Within thirty minutes of June’s arrest, the media exploded.

News outlets across the state aired breaking alerts: “Billionaire Shipping Tycoon’s Estate Raided — Personal Maid Arrested in $400,000 Corporate Embezzlement Scheme.”

In his private study, Miles stood behind his desk. The warm, vulnerable man who had sat in the dirt planting roses two hours ago was gone. In his place stood a predator—a man who had spent fifteen years conquering ruthless commercial markets, now driven by a cold, lethal fury.

Standing before him were three men: Marcus Vance (no relation to Julian Vance), the most dangerous corporate defense attorney in the state; Sam Vance, his head of private intelligence; and Arthur Pendelton, his CFO.

"June is currently being held at the Central Detention Facility," Marcus reported. "Bail has been set at one million dollars due to the high value of the stolen assets. I can have her bailed out by nine o'clock tomorrow morning."

"Pay it now," Miles commanded, his voice dropping an octave. "I don't care if you have to wake up a supreme court judge. Get her out of that cell tonight."

Arthur Pendelton stepped forward, pretending to look deeply concerned. "Miles, please... think logically. The evidence was found in her personal locker on your property. The public relations fallout is already tanking our stock price. Vanguard Holdings is using this scandal to convince the board that your judgment is compromised. You need to distance yourself from this woman immediately!"

Miles turned slowly, fixing Arthur with a glare so terrifying that the CFO took an involuntary step back.

"Distance myself?" Miles said softly, walking around his desk until he was inches from Arthur's face. "June Mercer saved my daughter’s life, Arthur. She gave my family back its soul. And someone in my company planted those bonds in her locker to destroy her."

Arthur swallowed hard, a tiny bead of sweat forming at his hairline. "Miles... you can't know it was an insider—"

"I know," Miles interrupted, his tone as sharp as a razor. "The vault security system requires a dual-biometric override for bearer bonds. A cleaning lady couldn't bypass that system if her life depended on it. Whoever planted those bonds had executive clearance."

Miles turned to his head of intelligence, Sam. "Sam, pull every frame of security footage from the downtown vault over the last seventy-two hours. Cross-reference every executive entry with phone logs, personal bank accounts, and recent communications with Vanguard Holdings."

"Right away, boss," Sam nodded, turning and leaving the room immediately.

Arthur’s hands trembled slightly inside his pockets. "Miles... what about the board meeting tomorrow? Julian Vance has called an emergency vote to strip you of executive authority, citing emotional instability and negligence."

Miles picked up his leather jacket, slipping it over his shoulders. "Tell Julian Vance to bring his entire legal team. Tomorrow, I end this."

Two hours later, the heavy iron doors of the Central Detention Facility opened.

June stepped out into the freezing midnight air, wrapping her thin coat around herself. Her eyes were red, her face pale, and her body shaking from the humiliaiton of being fingerprinted, searched, and locked in a concrete cell.

A black sedan was waiting at the curb.

Miles stepped out of the rear seat, holding a warm woolen coat and a thermos of hot tea. He walked straight to her, wrapping the heavy coat around her shivering shoulders.

"I promised I’d get you out," Miles whispered gently.

June looked up at him, tears bursting from her eyes as she collapsed against his chest. Miles wrapped his arms around her tightly, holding her in the cold night, completely indifferent to the news photographers who were snapping photos from across the street.

"They took me away from Ellie," June sobbed into his shoulder. "She was crying, Miles... I heard her crying..."

"Ellie is safe," Miles assured her, kissing the top of her head. "She walked across her room tonight to look for you, June. You gave her the strength to stand. Now, let me fight for you."

He opened the car door, helping her into the heated interior. "We are going to my house. You and your mother will stay in the guest wing under full private protection until this is over."

"Miles..." June looked at him, her eyes wide with fear. "Your reputation... your company... they are trying to ruin you because of me!"

Miles sat beside her, taking her cold, calloused hand into his own. "They didn't ruin me because of you, June. They attacked you because they thought you were my weakness. They are about to find out that you are my strength."
