Chapter 7 - The Trap Unfolds

By eight o'clock the following morning, the top floor of the Continental Tower was a war zone.

Dozens of reporters and television news vans lined the streets below, while inside the grand executive boardroom, twenty board members, major shareholders, and legal reps were gathered around a thirty-foot glass table.

At the head of the table sat Julian Vance, looking like a king preparing to claim a conquered territory. Beside him sat Arthur Pendelton, looking nervous and constantly checking his phone.

The double doors of the boardroom flew open.

Miles Stewart marched in. He wore a flawless tailored navy suit, his hair neatly styled, his expression radiating absolute, terrifying authority. Walking directly behind him was not a team of corporate lawyers, but June Mercer—dressed in a simple, elegant dark blue dress—and Sam, his head of intelligence, carrying a silver briefcase.

A collective gasp echoed through the room.

Julian Vance sneered, leaning back in his chair. "Miles... how remarkably bold of you to bring your criminal domestic staff to an executive board meeting. I suppose when a CEO loses his mind, he loses his sense of decorum as well."

"Sit down, Julian," Miles said calmly, taking his seat at the opposite end of the table. June sat quietly in a chair right behind him.

"This meeting has been called," Julian announced, raising his voice for the board members, "to vote on the immediate removal of Miles Stewart as CEO of Stewart Global Logistics under Clause 14 of the corporate charter—fiduciary negligence, emotional incompetence, and association with felony corporate theft!"

"Before you take that vote, Julian," Miles said smoothly, turning to Sam. "Let’s review the evidence."

Sam stepped forward, opening the silver briefcase and plugging a encrypted flash drive into the boardroom’s central media display.

A large digital video screen lit up on the wall, displaying high-definition security footage dated three days prior, at 11:42 PM.

The footage showed the interior of the secure executive vault. A man in a dark coat walked up to the safe, pulled out a master keycard, and entered a six-digit biometric code.

Arthur Pendelton’s face drained of every drop of color. He stood up so fast his chair nearly flipped over. "What... what is this?! This is an invasion of privacy!"

"Shut up and sit down, Arthur!" Miles commanded, his voice like a thunderclap that shook the room.

The video zoomed in on the man's face as he turned toward the camera. It was Arthur Pendelton.

The video continued, showing Arthur pulling the thick manila envelope of bearer bonds from the safe, slipping them into his briefcase, and walking out.

"That's not all," Sam announced, clicking to the next slide.

The screen displayed a series of bank statements and encrypted text logs. "At 1:15 AM that same night, Arthur Pendelton received a five-hundred-thousand-dollar wire transfer into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands. The transfer originated from a shell company registered to Vanguard Holdings—owned by Julian Vance."

The board members gasped, turning their eyes in horror toward Julian Vance and Arthur Pendelton.

"Furthermore," Sam continued, "we recovered physical security footage from the Stewart Estate parking area showing Arthur Pendelton’s personal vehicle entering the grounds at 3:00 AM yesterday—the exact time the stolen bonds were planted in June Mercer’s staff locker."

June sat in her chair, tears of relief welling in her eyes as the horrifying truth was laid bare before the entire board.

Arthur collapsed back into his chair, sweating profusely, unable to utter a single word of defense.

Julian Vance’s face turned red with fury, but he tried to maintain his composure. "This... this is an internal matter! Even if Arthur acted unethically, Stewart Global still owes Vanguard sixty million dollars in balloon debt due today! If you cannot pay, Miles, I will seize the company's maritime assets!"

Miles smiled—a slow, dangerous, wolfish grin.

He pulled a single piece of paper from his jacket and slid it across the glass table.

"That balloon payment was cleared at seven o'clock this morning, Julian," Miles said softly. "I funded the payoff personally, using my private equity assets as collateral. Vanguard no longer owns a single cent of my company's debt."

Miles stood up, leaning over the table, his eyes locking onto Vance. "You tried to destroy a good, honest woman who spent her life working while you stole billions. You tried to use my daughter's tragedy to steal my legacy."

Miles turned to the two uniformed police officers who had been standing quietly near the back door.

"Officers," Miles said, pointing at Julian Vance and Arthur Pendelton. "Arrest those men for corporate conspiracy, framing an innocent citizen, and grand larceny."
