Chapter 2 - The Shadow of Beatrice

William stood up, his imposing six-foot-two frame casting a dark shadow over the small grave. He wiped the rain from his face, his mind racing through possibilities with the ruthless precision of a corporate master strategist. Olivia was gone, taken by an aggressive illness no amount of money could cure. But here, standing before him in the gray Manhattan rain, was another piece of his heart—a child who carried his blood, Clara’s face, and a life of horrifying neglect.

"Where is Aunt Beatrice?" William asked, his voice low and dangerous, dropping the suit jacket’s cold corporate tone for something far more elemental.

"She’s waiting in the van near the front gates," Maya whispered, shivering violently under her wet clothes. "She gets mad if I take too long."

"Show me," William commanded gently. He stripped off his heavy cashmere overcoat—a jacket worth thousands—and wrapped it completely around Maya’s small frame, swallowing her up in warm, dry wool. He picked her up with one arm, cradling her against his chest as if she were made of delicate porcelain, and turned back to Olivia’s headstone one last time. I will protect her, Livvy, he promised silently. I swear it on your memory.

They walked through the narrow gravel paths of Trinity Church Cemetery toward the rusted iron gates on Broadway. Parked idling by the curb was a battered, rusted minivan with tinted windows.

Inside sat Beatrice Vance—Clara’s older half-sister. Beatrice was a woman who smelled of cheap gin and menthol cigarettes, her face hardened by years of resentment and poor choices. When she saw William approaching through the rain, carrying the girl, her eyes widened in a sudden surge of recognition and pure terror.

She scrambled to lock the driver's side door, but William was already there. He yanked the handle with such violent force that the old latch snapped with a sharp metallic crack. He pulled the door open, staring down at the trembling woman inside.

"William..." Beatrice gasped, clutching her purse to her chest. "What... what are you doing here?"

"Get out of the car, Beatrice," William said, his voice dropping into an icy register that had brought foreign conglomerates to their knees. "Now."
