Chapter 4 - The Sanctuary of Hartwell Manor

William did not return Maya to Beatrice. Within two hours, his legal team had drafted emergency custody documents citing severe child endangerment and physical neglect. Beatrice was taken into custody by NYPD officers at the cafe door, facing charges of child exploitation and fraud.

William carried Maya into his private towncar, ordering the driver to head directly to his estate in Greenwich, Connecticut.

As the luxury limousine glided through the rain, Maya stared out the tinted glass windows in complete silence. Her tiny hands were folded tightly over the warm velvet seat.

"Maya," William said softly, sitting across from her. "You don't ever have to sell flowers again. You don't have to be cold, or hungry, or afraid."

Maya looked up at him, her hazel eyes filled with a heartbreaking blend of hope and skepticism. "Are you a king?"

William let out a soft, sad laugh. "No, sweetheart. I'm just... someone who should have been there to protect you a long time ago."

When they arrived at Hartwell Manor—a sprawling stone estate surrounded by ancient oaks—the staff stood lined up in the grand foyer, stunned into silence. They had spent the last week preparing for the funeral of little Olivia; now, their master had returned carrying a child who looked like an exact ghost of the family’s lost past.

William personally led Maya up the grand staircase to the second floor. He bypassed the closed door of Olivia’s pink, toy-filled room—a space he could not yet bear to open—and brought Maya into a spacious guest suite overlooking the gardens.

"This is your home now," William whispered, kneeling down so he was eye-level with her. "Whatever you want, whatever you need, it's yours."

Maya looked at the soft four-poster bed, the plush ivory rugs, and the warm fireplace crackling in the corner. Then, she looked down at the wilted bouquet of daisies still held tightly in her small fist.

"Can I keep these?" she asked quietly. "Mommy said daisies mean that morning always comes after the dark."

William felt a tear finally break free, tracking down his cheek. "Yes, Maya. You can keep them."
