Chapter 3 - The Fortress on Hanover Street

The Moretti estate in Boston's historic North End was not a house; it was a fortress of stone, iron gates, and high security.

Behind thirty-foot brick walls topped with hidden cameras sat a sprawling four-story federalist mansion surrounded by manicured rose gardens.

When the heavy iron gates clicked shut behind the convoy, Belle felt a strange, suffocating sensation. She was a maid. She belonged in the service corridors, scrubbing baseboards, not walking through the mahogany front doors of the most powerful criminal syndicate in New England.

Inside, the grand foyer was warmed by a massive marble fireplace.

An elderly Italian housekeeper named Maria rushed forward, her eyes filled with tears as she wrapped little Sienna in a warm hug. "Madonna mia... look at you, sweet angel! You're safe!"

Maria turned to Belle and Micah, her stern face instantly softening. "And this is the brave boy? The one who held her?"

"This is Micah," Dominic announced, taking off his wet coat and handing it to a waiting guard. "And his mother, Belle. Maria, prepare the guest suite on the second floor. The sunny one facing the eastern garden."

"The second floor?" Maria blinked in surprise. "Mr. Moretti... that suite is reserved for visiting family."

"They are family now," Dominic said firmly.

Belle stepped forward, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Mr. Moretti, please... you've been very generous, but we cannot accept a guest suite. I can work. I can clean the house, I can wash the linens, I can—"

Dominic stopped, turning around slowly to look at her.

In the warm light of the foyer chandeliers, Belle was striking. Despite her worn cotton dress and tired eyes, she possessed a quiet, fierce beauty—dark gold hair pinned back haphazardly, striking blue eyes, and an aura of maternal strength that years of poverty hadn't managed to break.

"Miss Dawson," Dominic said, his deep voice filling the hall. "You are not a maid here. You are the mother of the boy who saved my heart. If you try to scrub a single floor in this house, Maria will throw the bucket out the window."

Sienna pulled Micah toward the grand dining table in the adjacent room, where a feast of homemade pasta, roast lamb, and fresh bread was already laid out.

"Come on, Micah!" Sienna giggled, her earlier trauma fading into the warmth of her home. "Maria made chocolate cannoli!"

For the first time in his life, Micah looked up at his mother with wide, hungry eyes. He hadn't eaten a hot meal since yesterday morning.

Belle’s heart melted. She swallowed her pride, wiping a tear from her cheek, and gave her son a soft nod. "Go ahead, sweetheart."

As the children ran toward the table, Dominic walked up beside Belle, standing close enough for her to feel the immense warmth radiating from his broad shoulders.

"Eat, Belle," Dominic said softly, using her first name for the first time. "You're safe here."
