Chapter 10 - The Golden Contract

Friday morning. Exactly one year since Emma and Chloe had tapped on Julian’s car window.
The bakery was closed for a private event. The front window was decorated with a beautiful paper banner that said OUR FAMILY, OUR STORY in gold, sparkling letters. But this time, the banner wasn't crooked; it was held perfectly in place by sturdy gold chains.
Inside, the room was filled with the scent of fresh cinnamon and vanilla.
Sophie stood by the counter, wearing a beautiful cream-colored lace dress. Beside her, Emma and Chloe were dressed in matching pale blue dresses, their hair styled in elegant braids.
Julian stood at the front of the room, looking nervous for the first time in his life. He adjusted his tie, his eyes fixed on the door.
The door opened, and Arthur, the driver, walked in, holding a small silver tray. On the tray sat a single, framed document.
Julian took the frame and walked over to where Sophie and the twins were standing. He knelt down in front of Emma and Chloe, just as he had done on the street a year ago.
"One year ago, you two gave me a contract," Julian said, his voice thick with emotion. "You paid me one dollar to pretend to be your father. It was the best investment I’ve ever made. But today, I want to renegotiate the terms."
He handed the frame to Emma.
Inside was an official, legally binding adoption paper, signed by a judge, waiting only for their signatures. And taped to the bottom of the frame was a single, shiny gold coin—a one-dollar gold piece.
"I don't want to pretend anymore," Julian said, tears shining in his eyes. "I want to be your real dad. Forever. If you sign this, the contract is permanent. No more installments. No more rent. Just us."
Emma and Chloe looked at the paper, then at each other. Without a word, they threw themselves into Julian's arms, sobbing with happiness.
"Yes! Yes, Dad!" Chloe cried, burying her face in his shoulder.
Emma clutched the frame tightly. "We don't need a receipt, Dad. This is the best contract ever."
Julian stood up, pulling Sophie into the hug. He looked at her, his eyes asking the question before he even spoke the words.
"And for you, Sophie," Julian whispered, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, velvet box containing a stunning pear-cut diamond ring. "Will you sign a contract with me too? To be my wife?"
May you like
Sophie laughed through her tears, her heart overflowing with a happiness she had never thought possible. "Yes, Julian. A thousand times, yes."
Outside, the sun broke through the gray morning clouds, bathing the bakery in a warm, golden light. The crooked banner of the past was gone, replaced by a story of love, courage, and a family that was finally, truly, complete.
