Chapter 8 - The Reconstruction

The next month was a whirlwind of paint, flour, and laughter.

The Golden Griddle was completely gutted. The greasy vinyl booths were replaced with soft, cream-colored leather, the walls were painted a bright, clean white with gold accents, and a state-of-the-art commercial baking kitchen was installed in the back.

Emma and Chloe were in their element. After school, they would run to the bakery, wearing tiny custom aprons Julian had ordered for them, helping their mother design the new menu.

"We need a pie called 'The Billionaire's Special,'" Chloe suggested, licking a spoon covered in chocolate frosting. "It should have gold flakes on top."

"And it should cost one dollar," Emma added, looking at Julian, who was sitting at the counter, helping Sophie with the payroll software.

"A one-dollar pie would ruin our profit margins, Emma," Julian smiled, but his eyes were soft as he looked at her.

"But it’s a very special dollar," Sophie said softly, her hand slipping into Julian's.

They had been dating officially for three weeks, and for Julian, the busy, high-stress world of Vance Enterprises had taken a backseat to this warm, bustling kitchen. He found himself looking forward to the end of the day, not to check the stock market, but to see Sophie’s face covered in flour, and to hear the twins arguing about which color of icing was best.

Even St. Francis Elementary had changed.

Vanessa Whitmore was no longer the queen of the parent committee; she had been quietly replaced after an audit of the committee's funds revealed "irregularities" that Julian’s team had uncovered. Tommy Whitmore no longer bragged about his father's video camera. In fact, he had asked Emma if he could have a slice of Sophie’s famous apple pie.
