Chapter 7 - The Mastermind's Trap

Before Marcus could pull the trigger, a blinding set of high-beam headlights flared out of nowhere, cutting through the dense fog like twin daggers.
An engine roared. A heavy vintage pickup truck—Sarah Carter’s rusty Ford F-150—burst through the saplings, slamming into Marcus at twenty miles an hour.
Marcus was launched onto the hood before tumbling violently into the muddy ravine below, his gun flying out of his hand and disappearing into the brush.
The driver’s door flew open. Sarah Carter stood there, holding her late husband's hunting rifle, her face a mask of absolute fury.
“Get in the truck!” Sarah screamed.
Lily scrambled up, grabbed the leather briefcase, and scrambled into the passenger seat alongside Emma. Sarah slammed the truck into reverse, spinning the tires in the mud before roaring down the gravel access road and leaving Hillrest Manor behind.
In the backseat, Julian sat up, breathless. “Are you all okay? Did anyone get hurt?”
“We’re fine,” Emma gasped, clutching her bruised ribs. She held up the leather briefcase. “We got it.”
An hour later, back at the Carter residence, the heavy briefcase sat on the kitchen table. Julian entered the combination into the twin dials: 1-0-2-4—his mother’s birthday.
The brass latches popped open with a satisfying click.
Inside lay three thick, leather-bound books filled with handwritten dates, bank account numbers, shipping manifests, and official seals. But sitting right on top of the books was a small, silver flash drive with an encrypted security key.
Julian picked up the drive, his hands trembling. “This... this isn't just shipping records. My mother backed up digital recordings of my father’s private meetings.”
He plugged the drive into Lily’s laptop. After a few moments of decryption, a video file played on the screen.
The image was clear. It showed Arthur Vance sitting in his luxury office in Manhattan, speaking directly to a known international criminal figure.
“The shipments will pass through Rotterdam without inspection,” Arthur’s voice boomed from the laptop speakers. “My son knows nothing. If he ever finds out, I will handle him the same way I handled Eleanor.”
The room went deathly silent.
Julian covered his face with his hands, tears slipping through his fingers. The truth was out. Arthur Vance hadn't just neglected his wife—he had murdered her to protect his empire, and he had been ready to kill his own son for the same reason.
“This is enough to put him away for life,” Lily said softly, placing a comforting hand on Julian’s shoulder. “Not just in America, but internationally.”
“It’s not over,” Emma said, looking out the kitchen window. The morning sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon. “Arthur Vance isn't a petty criminal. He has private security teams, lawyers, and politicians in his pocket. If we just turn this over to the local precinct, it will be buried before noon.”
“So how do we expose a billionaire who controls the news?” Sarah asked.

Lily looked down at her camera, then back at the laptop screen. A brilliant, risky smile spread across her face.
“We don't go to the local news,” Lily said. “We go to the entire world.”
