Chapter 8 - The Media Storm

By 8:00 AM on Sunday morning, the national news cycle was hit by a megaton bomb.

Lily Carter had spent the early morning hours editing together a high-definition video package. It contained:

The crisp, clear photos of Julian Vance trapped in the hidden attic room of Hillrest Manor.

The photos of Arthur Vance’s car on the property.

The medical report signed by Sarah Carter detailing Julian’s injuries, starvation, and captivity.

The damning video file from the silver flash drive showing Arthur Vance confessing to illicit operations and hinting at the murder of his wife.

Using her contacts from her high school journalism club and submitting the package anonymously through encrypted whistleblower channels directly to major international networks—CNN, The New York Times, and the BBC—the story broke simultaneously across the globe.

The headline dominated every television screen, news app, and social media platform:

"BILLIONAIRE HEIR RESCUED FROM WALL OF ABANDONED MANSION: FATHER ACCUSED OF ATTEMPTED MURDER AND INTERNATIONAL CONSPIRACY."

In Manhattan, the stock for Vance Global Logistics dropped thirty percent in less than twenty minutes. Board members panicked. Federal agents began assembling outside the Vance Global headquarters.

Inside the Carter home, the phone lines were ringing off the hook, but the family stayed silent and hidden behind locked doors and closed blinds.

Julian stood by the window, watching the television news ticker roll across the screen. For the first time in years, he looked like a weight had been lifted from his chest, though his face remained grim.

“He knows where we are now,” Julian said softly. “Arthur’s legal team will track the video upload IP address within hours. He won't surrender peacefully.”

“Let him try,” Sarah said, checking the bolt of her rifle. “The FBI is already involved. They’ve issued an emergency warrant for his arrest.”

Just then, a sleek, unmarked black SUV pulled into the Carter driveway, followed by three state police cruisers with their red and blue lights flashing silently.

Emma stood up, stepping to the window. “They’re here.”

“Is it Arthur’s men or the authorities?” Lily asked nervously.

A man in a crisp dark suit stepped out of the lead vehicle, carrying a federal badge. He looked up at the house, held up his hands to show he was unarmed, and called out:

“Julian Vance! I am Special Agent Miller with the Department of Justice Federal Task Force! We have Arthur Vance in custody at Teterboro Airport trying to board a private jet! You are safe!”

Julian collapsed back onto the sofa, letting out a long, shuddering breath that felt three days long.

Lily and Emma looked at each other and threw their arms around each other in a fierce, tearful embrace. They had survived.
