Chapter 7 - The Voice in the Dark

Adrian held her so tightly she could feel every frantic, terrifying beat of his heart against her chest. His hands trembled as he cupped her face, his dark eyes scanning every inch of her skin, looking for blood, looking for injuries.

"Are you hurt? Did he touch you? Talk to me, Clara, please!" Adrian begged, his voice hoarse and broken, completely stripped of all his cold billionaire authority.

"I'm... I'm okay," Clara panted, leaning her forehead against his wet shoulder, her hands grasping his torn lapels. "Lily... Adrian, Lily ran to the conservatory!"

Adrian stood up instantly, pulling Clara to her feet.

Behind them, Thomas Gray and four tactical security officers slid down the ropes through the broken window, taking control of the scene, securing the hallways, and cuffing the unconscious intruder.

"Clear the perimeter!" Gray ordered into his radio. "Moretti’s secondary team at Pier 4 has been neutralized! Secure the estate!"

Adrian didn't listen to Gray. He took Clara’s hand, locking his fingers firmly with hers, and rushed down the long corridor toward the west wing glass conservatory.

The conservatory was a massive, vaulted glass dome filled with exotic orchids, tropical ferns, and high stone fountains. Lightning flashed outside, illuminating the dark greenery in eerie white flashes.

In the center of the conservatory, hiding inside a thick cluster of tall white gardenias, was a small, shaking shadow.

"Lily?" Adrian called out softly, stepping into the glass room. He let go of Clara’s hand and dropped to his knees on the damp stone floor. "Lily, sweetheart... it’s Daddy. The bad men are gone. It’s safe."

The little girl didn't come out. She was curled into a ball, her arms wrapped tightly around her knees, sobbing silently, her body shivering violently from cold and terror.

Adrian felt a crushing, agonizing helplessness wash over him. He reached out his hands, but he was afraid to touch her—afraid his own hands, which had just taken a man's life ten seconds ago, would contaminate his innocent child.

Clara knelt beside Adrian on the stone floor. She didn't reach into the plants. She simply sat quietly, took a deep breath, and began to sing.

It was the soft, simple lullaby her mother had sung to her in Charlestown when the thunder rattled their small apartment windows:

"Deep in the meadow, under the willow... A bed of grass, a soft green pillow... Lay down your head, and close your sleepy eyes..."

Clara’s voice was warm, steady, and beautiful, cutting through the sound of the rain hammering against the glass dome above.

Slowly, the shaking in the bushes stopped.

A small, tear-stained face peered out from between the dark green leaves of the gardenia bush.

Lily looked at Clara. Then she looked at her father, standing on his knees, tears streaming down his fierce, bloody face.

Lily stepped out from the bushes. She walked slowly over to them.

She didn't just reach for Clara this time. She reached out both of her tiny arms, wrapping one arm around Clara’s neck and the other around Adrian’s neck, pulling them both into a tight, desperate embrace.

Adrian wrapped his broad arms around his daughter and Clara, burying his face in Lily’s soft hair, weeping openly for the first time in eight years.

Then, against Adrian’s shoulder, a tiny, raspy voice spoke.

It was quiet. It was rusty from eight months of disuse. It was fragile as a rose petal, but it was clear as a silver bell.

"Daddy..." Lily whispered. "Don't cry. The flower girl saved us."
