Chapter 2 - The Silent Torture

The realization hit Richard like a physical blow. The sudden unexplained tantrums over the last four months. Maya’s sudden refusal to speak her first words. Her terrifying night terrors whenever Victoria entered a room. It hadn't been grief. It hadn't been separation anxiety or the ghost of Eleanor.
Victoria was systematically conditioning Maya to appear unhinged, unstable, and terrified in her presence—all while playing the long-suffering, saintly stepmother suffering from a child’s irrational hatred.
Richard sat in the dark study, his broad shoulders shaking with a mixture of suffocating rage and gut-wrenching guilt. For months, he had validated Victoria’s tears. He had apologized to her for Maya’s behavior. He had allowed his innocent daughter to suffer invisible violence in her own home because he trusted the polished veneer of a woman he thought would save them.
He didn't scream. He didn't rush upstairs to confront Victoria. A man who built an international logistics empire did not strike until every supply line, exit route, and tactical advantage was secured. If he confronted her now without bulletproof legal evidence, her powerful Manhattan family and high-priced attorneys would paint him as an unhinged, grieving widower accusing a innocent socialite based on blurry security shadows.
Instead, Richard called Marcus Thorne—his personal head of security and a former elite federal investigator—at 2:15 AM.
Ten minutes later, Marcus arrived at the study through the service entrance. Richard showed him the paused frame on the monitor without saying a word.
Marcus leaned over the desk, his sharp eyes scanning the image. When he recognized the device, his jaw tightened. "An ultrasonic transducer. Variable frequency. It induces severe middle-ear pressure, nausea, and acute panic in toddlers. It leaves zero physical marks, zero bruising, and no trace on standard pediatric exams."
"I want every camera in this house replaced with military-grade pinhole lenses that capture full 4K spectrum and directional audio," Richard said, his voice dropping into a deadly, ice-cold register. "I want them in the nursery, the halls, her dressing room, and her private quarters. I want it done while she’s at her morning spa appointment tomorrow."

"Consider it done, boss," Marcus said quietly. "What about the child?"
Richard looked toward the window, where the first gray light of dawn was cutting through the winter trees. "From this second forward, my daughter does not spend another single second alone with that woman. Not one."
