Chapter 4 - Following the Money

That evening, Richard returned to the estate with Maya. He played the dutiful, slightly tired husband, sharing a quiet dinner with Victoria while Maya slept safely upstairs under Marcus’s personal, round-the-clock physical guard.
"You look distant tonight, Richard," Victoria noted, dabbing her lips with a cloth napkin as a butler cleared their plates. "Is something going on with the new port expansion project?"
"Just supply chain delays in Europe," Richard lied easily, swirling the red wine in his glass. "Nothing I can't handle. How was your day?"
"Oh, quiet," Victoria sighed gracefully. "I spent the afternoon working on the guest list for the charity gala next month. Though I must confess, I feel a bit lonely in this giant house when you and Maya are gone."
She reached across the table, covering his hand with hers. Her skin was warm, smooth, and utterly toxic. Richard didn't pull away; he forced himself to smile back, allowing her to believe her control over him was absolute.
Later that night, Marcus met Richard in the subterranean security vault located beneath the estate’s wine cellar.
"We traced the burner call she made this morning," Marcus reported, throwing a dossier onto the steel table. "She wasn't talking to an attorney or a girlfriend. She was talking to Julian Vance."
Richard stopped cold. "Her brother?"
"Her older half-brother," Marcus corrected. "Julian Vance runs a failing venture capital firm in London that lost nearly three hundred million dollars in bad offshore investments last quarter. He’s heavily indebted to European private lenders. If Julian doesn't come up with massive collateral by the end of the year, his firm goes into involuntary liquidation and he faces criminal fraud charges."
"And Eleanor’s family trust," Richard realized, his eyes narrowing, "holds twenty-five percent of the voting stock in Sterling Logistics. Stock that Eleanor explicitly willed to Maya, with full voting rights vested in whoever holds primary legal guardianship over her until she turns twenty-one."
"Exactly," Marcus said. "If Victoria can prove you are unfit due to 'emotional distress' or 'grief-induced neglect'—or if something happens to you—she steps in as Maya’s legal guardian. Julian gets his collateral, and Victoria secures a permanent seat on your board."
Richard stared at the dossier. The trap had been laid long before he ever met Victoria at that foundation gala. Her "accidental" introduction to him, her sweet patience with his grief, her gentle maternal affection—it had all been a long, cold execution of corporate piracy.
"They underestimated one thing," Richard said softly, his voice dripping with venom.

"What's that, boss?"
"They thought I was just a grieving businessman," Richard whispered, looking at the security monitor showing his daughter sleeping peacefully in her crib. "They didn't realize I would burn the entire world to the ground to keep her safe."
