Chapter 5 - The Shadow Network
The arrests of Richard Klein and Donald Vance sent shockwaves across Wall Street, but the nightmare was far from over.
At 2:00 AM, Robert sat by Parker’s hospital bed. The boy had finally opened his eyes, his breathing normal again. Catherine slept fitfully on the small sofa in the corner.
"Dad?" Parker’s voice was small, scratchy.
Robert instantly grabbed his son’s hand, pressing it to his cheek. "I’m here, buddy. I'm right here."
"A lady gave me a pretzel..." Parker whispered. "She said you bought it for me. She told me to eat it before you got to the car."
"I know, son. Don't worry about it now. You're safe."
"Where is the girl?" Parker asked softly. "The one who held my hand?"
Robert smiled genuinely for the first time in thirty-six hours. "She’s safe too. She’s staying in a nice hotel with her mom. You’ll meet her soon."
A gentle knock on the door broke the quiet. Marcus stepped inside, gesturing for Robert to step out into the hallway.
"We interrogated Arthur, the driver," Marcus said in a low voice. "He broke. He admitted taking fifty thousand dollars to let a woman approach Parker outside the school. But Robert... Arthur said Klein didn't plan this alone."
"What do you mean?"
"Klein was bankrupt," Marcus revealed, showing Robert a financial audit on his tablet. "Klein Systems was a shell company. He was being backed by an offshore syndicate—a dark fund that wanted to acquire Blackwell Enterprises to launder over eight billion dollars in illegal foreign capital. When you insisted on strict compliance audits during the acquisition, they realized you were going to discover the money laundering scheme."

"So they tried to break me," Robert realized, his fist tightening until his knuckles turned white. "They wanted me out of the chair so Donald Vance could sign off on the merger without the compliance audit."
"And the mastermind behind that offshore fund," Marcus added, hesitant, "is someone who used to sit on your inner circle."
