Chapter 4 - The Ledger of Sins

Every pair of eyes in the library snapped to Hannah.
Roman instantly moved to her side, standing behind her chair with one hand resting heavily on her shoulder. The lethal tension in his frame didn't dissipate, but it transformed into a focused, protective aura.
“What do you have, sweetheart?” Roman asked gently.
Hannah touched her tablet, tapping a short command that mirrored her screen onto the massive 85-inch television screen mounted above the library fireplace.
The dark glass lit up instantly, displaying a complex, color-coded forensic flowchart. At the top of the chart was the logo of the Duca Children’s Medical Foundation. Below it were six branching pathways leading to shell companies registered in Panama, Zurich, and the Cayman Islands.
Bianca folded her arms, trying to regain her dominant posture, though her chin trembled slightly. “What is this nonsense? More technical jargon to confuse us?”
“No, Bianca,” Hannah said calmly, stepping out of her chair and walking toward the center of the room. “This is the complete forensic audit of the eight-million-dollar transfer. Verified independently by the Federal Financial Crimes Network’s cyber-fraud unit.”
Nicholas’s hand tightened around his scotch glass so hard the crystal groaned under the pressure. “Hannah... if you’ve contacted federal regulators without board approval, you’ve put the entire family at risk of a tax audit—”
“Shut up, Nicholas,” Roman commanded without looking at him. “Let her speak.”
Hannah pointed to the top left of the screen. “Three days ago, at 2:14 AM, an automated sweep attempted to siphon eight million dollars out of the foundation’s primary liquidity vault. The transaction was executed using my administrative credentials.”
“Ha!” Bianca pointed a triumphant finger at Hannah. “You admit it! It was your account!”
“It was my digital identity, yes,” Hannah replied, unbothered. “However, what the person who cloned my credentials didn't know is that three weeks ago, I quietly updated the foundation’s security architecture. I installed a digital watermark on my personal access key. Every time my key is used, it logs the hardware MAC address and the physical GPS location of the device initiating the transfer.”
She tapped her tablet again.
The screen zoomed in on the bottom right quadrant of the flowchart. A red box highlighted a specific line of code, expanding into a set of hardware specifications and an IP address map.
“The request to transfer the eight million dollars did not come from my laptop in the master suite,” Hannah explained, her voice as clear and methodical as a judge reading a verdict. “It originated from a high-frequency trading server located inside the downtown office of Vale Financial Services.”
Uncle Mateo frowned, looking between the screen and Nicholas. “Vale Financial? Nicholas... that’s your primary firm.”
“This is absurd!” Nicholas laughed, though the sound was shrill and hollow. “My firm hosts the foundation’s secondary backup servers! Of course our IP address is logged on the system! Hannah is manipulating the data to clear her own name!”
“I assumed you would say that,” Hannah said softly. She swiped her finger across the screen.
A second document appeared on the wall. It was a personal bank statement from an offshore account in the Cook Islands, registered under the name N.V. Global Logistics Ltd.
“This is a private offshore account opened four months ago,” Hannah continued. “At 2:16 AM three days ago—two minutes after the eight million was pulled from our foundation—a draft confirmation was sent to this account to receive the funds once they cleared the Panamanian clearinghouses. And do you know who the sole signatory on N.V. Global Logistics is, Nicholas?”
Nicholas took a step back, his face completely drained of color. He looked toward the door, but two of Roman’s personal security guards—broad-shouldered men in dark suits—were already standing silently in front of the exit, their arms crossed.
“The signatory is you, Nicholas,” Hannah said. “Along with a personal phone number used for two-factor authentication. A phone number registered to your private mobile line.”
A collective gasp echoed through the room.
Bianca turned her head slowly toward her beloved nephew. Her eyes were wide with shock, her mouth open in horror. “Nicholas...? What... what is she talking about? Tell her she’s lying! Tell me you didn't do this!”
Nicholas didn't answer. He stared at Hannah with pure, unadulterated hatred. The smooth, charming facade he had maintained for years disintegrated, leaving behind the panicked, desperate face of a trapped predator.
“You arrogant, fat little bitch,” Nicholas spat, his voice laced with venom.
Before Nicholas could even complete the sentence, Roman moved.
The speed was terrifying. Roman crossed the distance between them in a split second. His heavy, scarred right hand slammed into Nicholas’s throat, lifting the smaller man off his feet and pinning him violently against the mahogany bar. Decanters and glasses shattered on the floor, splashing amber liquid across the oriental rug.
Nicholas kicked his legs uselessly, his hands clawing at Roman’s iron grip as his face turned dark red.
“Roman!” Uncle Dominic yelled, stepping forward in panic. “Roman, don't kill him!”
“Give me one reason why I shouldn't,” Roman growled, his voice vibrating with absolute lethality. His dark eyes were cold, void of any human mercy. “He stole from my family. He tried to frame my wife. And he just insulted her in my house.”
“Roman... please...” Nicholas choked out, his eyes bulging with terror.
Hannah walked over slowly. She placed her hand gently on Roman’s tensed back. She didn't pull him away; she simply rested her palm against his spine, offering him her calm, grounding presence.
“Let him speak, Roman,” Hannah said softly. “I want his mother and your mother to hear every word.”
Roman held Nicholas against the wall for three more agonizing seconds before loosening his grip just enough to allow the man’s feet to touch the floor. Nicholas slumped against the bar, coughing violently, gasping for air while clutching his bruised throat.
“Why did you do it, Nicholas?” Hannah asked, standing beside Roman, looking down at him. “You make six hundred thousand a year managing the family accounts. Why steal eight million from a children’s hospital foundation?”
Nicholas leaned against the mahogany wood, his chest heaving as he wiped blood from his lip. He looked up at Bianca, then at Roman, a bitter, twisted smile touching his face.
“Because I was broke!” Nicholas croaked out, his voice raw. “I lost twelve million in short positions on tech stocks three months ago! The people I owed money to aren't accountants, Roman! They’re dangerous people from Europe! They threatened to kill my sister if I didn't pay by the end of the year!”
Bianca took a staggering step back, collapsing into an armchair, covering her face with her hands. “Oh God... oh my God...”
“I knew Hannah was auditing the accounts,” Nicholas spat, glaring at her. “I knew she was getting close to finding the Swiss backdoors. So I used her cloned key. I thought if I moved the money on Christmas Eve, the family would blame her! She’s an outsider! Aunt Bianca already hated her! It was perfect!”
“It was sloppy,” Hannah corrected calmly. “You underestimated me because you thought like Bianca. You saw a woman who didn't come from your world, and you assumed I was stupid.”
Hannah turned back to the room, looking at the stunned, pale faces of the Duca family.
“The eight million dollars was never lost,” Hannah announced clearly. “I intercepted the transfer three days ago and diverted it into a secure federal escrow account. The foundation hasn't lost a single penny. The funds will be fully restored to the medical program by Monday morning.”
Silence descended upon the library once more.
Every single member of the Duca family stared at Hannah. The woman they had spent eighteen months snickering about behind closed doors. The woman they had called an outsider. The woman who had just saved their family from a multi-million-dollar federal scandal, financial ruin, and public disgrace.
Roman looked down at his wife. The cold, murderous fury in his eyes vanished, replaced by an overwhelming, blazing pride. He wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his side, letting everyone in the room see where his devotion lay.
Then, Roman turned his dark, unforgiving gaze toward his mother.
“Two hours ago,” Roman said, his voice ringing through the silent room like a death knell, “you slapped my wife. You called her a thief. You insulted her body, her family, and her name.”
Bianca slowly lifted her head from her hands. Her eyes were bloodshot, her face pale as a sheet. She looked at Nicholas, then at Hannah, realizing the catastrophic depth of her mistake.

“Roman...” Bianca whispered, her voice trembling. “I... I didn't know...”
“You didn't want to know,” Roman cut her off mercilessly. He stepped forward, pulling Hannah with him. “Now, Bianca... you have a choice to make.”
