Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

The fire crackled softly in the hearth, throwing warm, flickering light across the silent library. Nobody dared to breathe.

“What choice?” Bianca whispered, her hand trembling against her throat.

Roman stood tall, his arm wrapped tightly around Hannah’s waist, his physical presence dominating the vast room.

“You will get down on your knees,” Roman said, his voice flat, emotionless, and absolute. “You will look my wife in the eyes, and you will beg for her forgiveness.”

Bianca gasped, her eyes widening in sheer horror. “Roman! I am your mother! You cannot ask me to humiliate myself like a servant!”

“You humiliated yourself the moment you raised your hand against the mistress of this house,” Roman replied without a shred of pity. “If you do not apologize to Hannah right now, on your knees, I will execute three things before midnight.”

He raised one finger. “First, I will strip your executive title from the Duca Medical Foundation and dissolve your personal discretionary trust.”

He raised a second finger. “Second, I will sell the stone estate you are currently sitting in to a commercial developer, and you will be moved to a private apartment in downtown Chicago.”

He raised a third finger. “Third, you will never set foot in my home, attend a family gathering, or see any future children Hannah and I bring into this world.”

The threat struck Bianca like a physical blow. The color completely drained from her face. She looked at Uncle Mateo and Uncle Dominic, searching for support, but both men kept their eyes firmly fixed on the floorboards. They knew Roman was not making empty threats. Roman built empires and broke men for a living. If he said he would erase his mother from his life, he would do it without flinching.

“Mateo... Dominic... say something!” Bianca pleaded, her voice cracking.

Uncle Mateo sighed, looking up with sad, tired eyes. “Bianca... you were wrong. You struck an innocent woman. You tried to ruin Roman’s marriage over false assumptions. You need to fix this.”

Bianca turned back to Roman, seeing the absolute, unyielding iron in her son’s eyes. Then she looked at Hannah.

Hannah stood beside Roman, her posture graceful and unbothered. There was no triumph in her expression, no cruel satisfaction. There was only the quiet, dignified stillness of a woman who knew her worth and required no validation from elitists.

Slowly, agonizingly, Bianca stood up from her leather chair. Her knees shook so violently she had to hold onto the armrest for support.

She took two halting steps toward Hannah.

Then, before twenty-three members of the Duca family, the proud, arrogant matriarch of the Duca empire sank slowly onto her knees on the oriental rug.

Tears of pure humiliation spilled over Bianca’s cheeks, ruining her pristine makeup. She looked up at Hannah, her lips trembling.

“Hannah...” Bianca choked out, her voice barely a whisper. “I... I was wrong. I let my prejudice and my anger blind me. I accused you of something terrible... and I struck you. Please... please forgive me.”

The room held its collective breath.

Hannah looked down at her mother-in-law. She felt no desire to gloat. She had spent her entire life watching people try to make her feel small because of her weight, her background, or her quiet nature. She knew the poison of cruelty, and she refused to let it contaminate her own heart.

Hannah stepped forward, extending a hand down toward Bianca.

“Get up, Bianca,” Hannah said softly.

Bianca looked at Hannah’s outstretched hand in shock. Slowly, she took it, allowing Hannah to help her stand back up onto her feet.

“I forgive you for the slap,” Hannah said, her tone clear and firm. “Because I love your son, and I will not let poison live in our home. But understand this, Bianca: from this day forward, respect in this family will be earned, not inherited. You will never raise your hand, your voice, or your disdain toward me again.”

Bianca swallowed hard, bowing her head in silent submission. “I understand.”

Roman looked at his wife, his dark eyes shining with a reverence so profound it touched every soul in the room. He reached over, taking Hannah’s hand, lacing his fingers securely through hers.

“Now,” Roman turned his cold attention back to Nicholas, who was still slumped against the bar, guarded by the two security detail men. “As for you.”

Nicholas shrank back, his eyes wild with fear. “Roman... please! I’m family! I made a mistake! I was desperate!”

“You didn't just steal money, Nicholas,” Roman said, his voice dropping into a register that chilled the blood. “You attempted to destroy my wife’s life to cover your own debts. You called her a slur in my presence.”

Roman looked at his head security officer. “Take him downstairs to the wine cellar. Hold him there until the federal authorities arrive at dawn. Hand over the complete forensic file Hannah prepared. Let his offshore creditors know that the Duca family will not be covering a single cent of his debts.”

Nicholas screamed as the two broad-shouldered guards grabbed him by his arms, dragging him out of the library. “Roman! No! Please! They’ll kill me! Aunt Bianca, help me!”

Bianca closed her eyes, turning her face away as her nephew’s frantic screams faded down the grand stone staircase.

Roman looked around the room at the remaining twenty-two members of the Duca family. Every single uncle, aunt, and cousin stood in absolute, terrified silence, looking at Hannah with new eyes—eyes filled with profound respect, awe, and genuine fear.

“Dinner is over,” Roman announced calmly. “Everyone will return to their rooms. Tomorrow morning, we will discuss the restructuring of the family foundation under my wife’s complete authority.”

Nobody argued. Within two minutes, the library cleared, leaving only Roman and Hannah standing before the dying embers of the hearth.

Roman turned to Hannah, taking both of her hands in his. He lifted them to his lips, pressing a long, warm kiss against her knuckles.

“You were brilliant,” he murmured against her skin.

Hannah offered a soft, tired smile, resting her head against his broad chest. “I just wanted to protect what’s ours.”

May you like

Roman wrapped his arms around her lush, soft frame, burying his face in her dark hair, holding her as if she were the most precious treasure in the universe—because to him, she was.

“Let’s go home, sweetheart,” Roman whispered. “This house belongs to us now.”
