Chapter 4 - The Line in the Sand

The temperature in Room 204 plummeted to sub-zero.
Claire gasped, her instincts instantly taking over. She moved like lightning, placing her body directly between the door and Milo’s bed, her arms outstretched as if she could shield her son from the brutal world outside with her bare skin.
"How does Salvatore know about Milo?" Claire panicked, her eyes wide with terror. "Nico, how does he know?!"
"He doesn't know Milo is my son," Nico said, his voice terrifyingly calm, though a muscle in his jaw throbbed violently. "He knows I rushed to St. Catherine's at 4:00 a.m. with four security vehicles. He monitored my convoy's GPS."
Nico turned to Luca. "How many men did Salvatore bring?"
"Four in the SUV, two more walking through the main lobby," Luca answered smoothly, pulling a sleek black semi-automatic pistol from his shoulder holster and checking the chamber with a quiet click. "They aren't looking for a firefight in a hospital, Don Falcone. Salvatore wants a sit-down. He knows you're vulnerable tonight."
"He thinks I'm vulnerable," Nico corrected coldly.
Nico turned back to Claire. He stepped close to her, ignoring her flinch, and placed his heavy, warm hands firmly on her shoulders. His dark eyes locked onto hers with absolute, terrifying clarity.
"Listen to me, Claire," Nico commanded, his tone leaving no room for fear. "Nothing is going to happen to you. Nothing is going to happen to our son. Do you hear me?"
"Nico, please—" she sobbed silently.
"Luca stays inside this room," Nico instructed, ignoring her plea as he mapped out the tactical defense. "He has two men posted outside the door and three more in the stairwell. Nobody enters this room without my voice granting permission. If anyone tries to force that door, Luca will shoot them through the wood."
Luca nodded once, silent and lethal.
Nico reached into his coat, pulled out a small, heavy silver key, and pressed it into Claire’s trembling palm, folding her fingers over it tightly.
"If I am not back in this room in twenty minutes," Nico instructed her, his voice dropping to an intense whisper, "take Milo, exit through the rear service elevator on the left, and use that key to open the black armored sedan parked in bay three. The driver knows where to take you."
"Nico, don't go out there!" Claire begged, gripping his coat lapels, her pride completely evaporating in the face of absolute terror for her child. "Call the police! This is a hospital!"
Nico looked down at her hands holding his jacket. A small, sad smile touched his sharp lips for a fraction of a second.
"The police can't stop men like Salvatore, Claire," Nico said gently, reaching up to brush a stray tear from her cheek with his thumb. "I can."
He turned away, unbuttoning his suit jacket so his hand could rest naturally near his custom firearm concealed beneath his arm, and stepped out into the quiet, fluorescent-lit hospital corridor.
The heavy door of Room 204 clicked shut behind him.
Claire stood frozen in the middle of the room, holding the cold silver key tightly against her chest, listening to the agonizing silence of the hallway outside.
At the end of the corridor, near the elevators, stood Salvatore Marco—a heavy-set man in his late fifties wearing an expensive leather trench coat, his face scarred by years of brutal street warfare. Behind him stood two muscular lieutenants with their hands buried deep inside their coat pockets.
Salvatore smiled, revealing a row of nicotine-stained teeth as he watched Nico walk calmly down the hallway toward him.
"Nico," Salvatore greeted, his voice raspy and unpleasant. "You left Manhattan in a terrible hurry tonight. My boys thought you were being ambushed. Imagine my surprise when I found out you rushed to a public charity hospital in Queens."
Nico stopped six feet away. He didn't look at Salvatore’s lieutenants. His dark eyes were fixed on Salvatore’s throat.
"You have five seconds to turn around and walk back to your car, Salvatore," Nico said, his voice dangerously smooth.
"Now, is that any way to speak to your late uncle's business partner?" Salvatore sneered, taking a slow step forward. "I heard a rumor that a sweet little girl from your past had a sick kid upstairs. I thought maybe I'd come pay my respects. See if the Falcone bloodline expanded without the commission's permission."
Nico’s hand moved so fast it was a blur.
Before Salvatore’s bodyguards could even react, Nico had closed the six-foot distance, grabbed Salvatore by his leather collar, and slammed his heavy body violently against the reinforced glass window of the nurse's station.
The glass cracked with a loud CRACK.
Nico rammed the cold muzzle of his suppressed firearm directly under Salvatore’s jawline, lifting the heavy man onto his tiptoes.
"Listen to me very carefully, you pathetic piece of trash," Nico growled into Salvatore’s ear, his eyes burning with a demon's rage. "If you even pronounce the name of the child in that room out loud, I will execute you in this hallway, hunt down every member of your family in Chicago, and feed their remains to the dogs in Atlantic City. Do you test me?"

Salvatore’s eyes went wide with pure, choking terror. He felt the cold steel pressing into his throat, cutting off his airway. He realized, in an instant, that Nico Falcone was not acting like a calculated mob boss tonight.
He was acting like an unleashed monster protecting his lair.
