Chapter 1 - Shadows on the Lawn

The golden glow of the fairy lights began to flicker as the late June breeze swept across the manicured lawns of the Chestnut Hill estate. The guests had begun to disperse, their laughter echoing down the paved driveway as valet drivers brought around luxury sedans and sports cars.

Jackson Ford stood on the edge of the stone terrace, his arm wrapped securely around Jasmine’s waist. He could feel the soft, rhythmic rise and fall of her chest against his side. Harper had already fallen asleep, her small head resting on Robert’s shoulder as the loyal bodyguard carried her upstairs to her bedroom, her stuffed rabbit dangling loosely from her tiny hand.

"We did it, Jackson," Jasmine whispered, her voice a soft thread of warmth in the cooling evening air. She turned her head, resting her cheek against the lapel of his tailored navy suit. "Ten community centers. Hundreds of kids who will finally have a safe place to sleep."

"We did it," Jackson murmured, kissing the crown of her head. He breathed in the scent of her lavender hair, a sweet contrast to the metallic, smoky memories that used to haunt him. "But it's only the beginning, Jasmine. The real work starts tomorrow."

Before Jasmine could reply, Marcus stepped onto the terrace from the French doors of the main study. His expression was a stark contrast to the celebratory mood of the evening. His jaw was clenched tight, and his eyes—usually sharp and calculating—carried a heavy, shadow-filled urgency.

He didn't speak. He simply held out a sleek, black burner phone.

Jackson’s grip on Jasmine’s waist tightened instinctively. He recognized that look. It was the look Marcus wore when the old world—the dark, ruthless syndicate Jackson had spent years tearing down—decided to claw its way back to the surface.

"What is it, Marcus?" Jackson asked, his deep voice dropping to a gravelly, commanding whisper.

"A message, boss," Marcus said, his voice flat. "It came through the old secure channel. The one we encrypted and abandoned three years ago when we dismantled the Red Thorn Syndicate."

Jackson took the phone. The screen flickered with a single, unread text message from an untraceable, satellite-routed number.

“A king can build as many sanctuaries as he likes, Ford. But a castle built on blood always returns to the earth. See you soon. - A.V.”

Jackson’s blood ran cold.

A.V.

Alistair Vance.

The ruthless, brilliant strategist of the Red Thorn Syndicate whom Jackson had personally sent to a maximum-security federal penitentiary five years ago. Vance was supposed to be serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole in ADX Florence.

"Is he...?" Jasmine’s voice trembled, her green eyes wide with a sudden, sharp terror as she looked at Jackson's face. She had lived through the terror of the Red Thorn years. She knew exactly what those initials meant.

"He escaped, Jackson," Marcus said, his voice a grim confirmation of their worst nightmare. "Two days ago, during a high-security medical transport in Colorado. The feds tried to keep it quiet, but my contacts in the bureau just confirmed it. Vance is out. And he’s already in Pennsylvania."

The summer night, once so warm and full of promise, suddenly felt as cold as a mountain winter.
