Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Boardroom

Jackson Ford sat at the head of the conference table in the corporate headquarters of Ford Enterprises. Marcus stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows, his arms crossed, watching the rain beat violently against the glass.

The door to the boardroom opened, and Robert walked in, his face grim. He handed Jackson a tablet.

"The asset forfeiture division just flagged a series of highly coordinated short-sells on our corporate stock," Robert reported. "Someone is systematically attacking Ford Enterprises’ financial lines. They are trying to freeze our liquid assets, which would halt all funding for the Harper Ford Foundation's new shelters."

Jackson stared at the screen, his fingers tracing the sharp edge of the tablet. "It’s Vance. He’s using his old offshore shell companies in Panama and the Cayman Islands. He wants to choke us out financially before he makes his physical move."

"We can counter-attack, Jackson," Marcus suggested, his eyes glinting with a dangerous, old energy. "I still have the encryption keys to Vance’s old accounts. We can drain his war chest before he can execute the next short-sell."

"No," Jackson said, his deep voice carrying a cold, authoritative weight. "If we use those keys, we violate federal banking laws. The FBI is already watching us, Marcus. If we touch that money, we give them a reason to freeze the foundation's assets ourselves. Vance is baiting us. He wants us to break the law to defend ourselves, destroying our legitimacy in the process."

The double doors of the boardroom suddenly swung open.

A tall, lean man dressed in a pristine gray suit walked in, flanked by two corporate attorneys. He had sharp, hawkish features and a smug, patronizing smile that made Jackson’s jaw clench.

It was Alistair Vance's younger brother and legal proxy, Julian Vance.

"Mr. Ford," Julian said, his voice smooth as silk as he walked to the center of the room, entirely unfazed by the hostile glares of Marcus and Robert. "I believe you have something that belongs to my family."

Jackson didn't stand up. He sat perfectly still, a sleeping lion waiting for the right moment to strike. "You have exactly ten seconds to state your business, Julian, before Robert throws you out of this window."

Julian chuckled, waving his lawyers back. "Always so dramatic, Jackson. I am here on behalf of the Vance Estate. We have just acquired a controlling interest in the construction firm you hired to build your precious community centers. As of ten minutes ago, we are canceling all building contracts with the Harper Ford Foundation."

He leaned over the table, his eyes turning cold and venomous.

"My brother sends his regards. He wants you to know that the crown you stole from him is going to crush you and your beautiful family."
