Chapter 7 - The Lingering Shadow

By late afternoon, the chaos had settled into a heavy, contemplative calm.

Claire sat on a wooden bench in the private courtyard of the Mercer estate, watching the sunlight glint off the icy surface of Lake Michigan. The events of the past twenty-four hours felt like a fever dream—the freezing river, the armed men, the frantic dash through the hospital basement, and the sudden, devastating unraveling of Arthur Vance’s conspiracy.

Footsteps crunched on the gravel behind her.

She didn't need to turn around to know who it was.

Roman walked up, holding a steaming mug of black coffee, and held it out to her. Claire took it, offering a small, tired smile of thanks.

"The federal authorities have formally seized Arthur Vance’s assets," Roman said, leaning against the stone balustrade beside her. "Your bank account has been cleared of the fifty thousand dollars, and the formal investigation into your involvement has been officially closed with prejudice."

Claire blew gently across the surface of the coffee. "So I’m officially no longer an international criminal mastermind?"

"Not until your next career change," Roman deadpanned, though the corners of his mouth twitched upward into the faint ghost of a real smile.

Claire laughed softly, the tension finally draining from her shoulders. "And Ethan?"

"He's inside playing video games with Viktor," Roman replied, a warmth softening his dark eyes. "He asked about you ten minutes ago. Wants to know when you're coming back to visit."

Claire looked up at him, her gray-blue eyes holding his gaze. "I saved his life, Roman. But your world... it’s not mine. I'm an ER nurse. I patch up broken bones and send people home. I don't belong in armored SUVs and shootouts."

"I know," Roman said quietly. He reached out, his warm fingers brushing gently against her hand resting on the bench. "Which is why I’ve already taken care of your student loans. And your rent."

Claire pulled her hand back, her eyes widening in indignation. "Roman! I told you I didn't want charity—"

"It's not charity," Roman interrupted smoothly, his voice dropping into a low, compelling register. "It’s a retainer. For lifetime medical consultation services for my family. And..." He paused, taking a half-step closer. "...an excuse to make sure you never have to worry about rent again."

Claire stared at him, speechless. The dangerous, terrifying mob boss who had interrogated her at gunpoint on a freezing pier was standing before her, offering her a future free from the crushing weight of debt and fear.

"You're impossible, you know that?" she whispered, shaking her head with a disbelieving smile.

"So I've been told," Roman replied softly.

He reached out again, this time intertwining his fingers with hers. The touch was warm, grounding, and undeniable.

For the first time since she had jumped into the black November water, Claire felt like she had finally reached solid ground.
