Chapter 8 - The Price of Normalcy

The transition back to "normal" life for Claire Bennett was, quite predictably, anything but normal. Returning to her apartment on North Clark Street felt like stepping onto the set of a movie where she had forgotten her lines. Winston the cat greeted her with a disgruntled meow and an indignant swat to the ankle, seemingly unimpressed by the fact that his human had spent the previous forty-eight hours embroiled in a syndicate war.

But the silence of the apartment was no longer comforting—it felt empty.

Three days after Arthur Vance’s fall, Claire stood in her small kitchen, staring at a stack of mail that included a final notice from her electricity provider. She reached for her phone to call the company, her finger hovering over the screen, when a different notification popped up: a secure, encrypted message from Roman.

“The security detail outside your building is being rotated. They have instructions to remain until the remaining elements of Vance’s network are fully neutralized. Do not deviate from your routine. I will see you on Sunday.”

Claire let out a long, shuddering breath. She didn't want the security detail. She wanted the ability to walk to the grocery store without checking over her shoulder. She wanted to be just Claire, the nurse who dealt with broken collarbones and flu symptoms, not the woman who had become a permanent entry in the ledger of Chicago’s most dangerous man.

That evening, she found herself at Lakeview General for her first shift back. The hospital felt like a sanctuary, a place where life and death were measured in heart rates and oxygen saturation, not in leverage and power.

But the peace was shattered at 9:00 PM.

She was checking a patient’s IV line when the double doors of the trauma bay swung open. A man was rushed in, bleeding profusely from a gunshot wound to the shoulder. As the trauma team swarmed him, Claire recognized the face of the man who had been the first operative to step out of the hospital stairwell during the firefight.

He was alive. And he was conscious.

As the team stabilized him, Claire took a moment to check his chart. He was listed as a Jane Doe—unidentified. As the lead doctor stepped out to consult with his supervisor, Claire leaned in close, checking the man’s vitals.

His eyes flickered open. They were glassy, wild with delirium and pain.

"You..." he rasped, his voice barely audible over the hum of the heart monitor. "You’re the one... with the Mercer kid."

Claire froze, her hand hovering over his blood pressure cuff. "Who sent you? Was it someone left over from Vance’s crew?"

The man let out a wet, mocking laugh that turned into a spasm of coughing. "Vance was... a distraction. He was a greedy fool. The real war... hasn't even begun."

Before she could press him, a sudden, heavy silence filled the trauma bay. Claire turned to see Roman Mercer standing in the doorway, his charcoal overcoat draped over his arm, his eyes locked onto the wounded operative with a look of pure, concentrated fury.

He didn't look at Claire. He didn't look at the doctors. He walked straight to the bedside, leaned down, and whispered something into the man’s ear.

The operative’s face went white.

Roman turned and walked out, his presence leaving the room feeling colder than the refrigerated trauma ward itself.

Claire followed him out into the hallway, her heart racing. "What did he say, Roman? Who is the real war with?"

Roman stopped and turned to her. His expression was no longer the soft, almost vulnerable look he had worn in the garden. It was the face of a man preparing for a slaughter.

"Vance was a symptom, Claire," Roman said, his voice hard as iron. "There is a power vacuum in this city, and predators are coming from across the country to fill it. You are no longer just a bystander. If you stay near me, you are a target. If you leave, you are a loose end."

May you like

"Then let me be a loose end," Claire challenged, her voice trembling.

"I can't," Roman replied, reaching out to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. His touch was light, but his eyes were burning. "Because I’ve realized that you’re the only thing in my life that doesn't have a price tag. And I’m not letting you go."
