Chapter 7 - The Ledger of Blood

Detective Vance lowered her weapon slightly, her eyes narrowing. "A ledger? Where is it?"
Rachel pointed weakly to the blue duffel bag sitting on the floor. Vance knelt, tearing through the stacks of cash until her fingers hit a false bottom. With a hard pull, she ripped the lining away, revealing a small, leather-bound black book.
She opened it, her eyes scanning the pages. Her face went pale. "My God... half the precinct is on here. Including my captain."
"They knew I had it," Rachel whispered, coughing up a speck of blood. "That’s why they torched my car. They thought I was inside. But I jumped before it went over the guardrail. I had to make sure they followed me, not the kids. But they caught up to me... they dragged me here."
"Who dragged you?" Vance asked sharply.
Before Rachel could answer, a shadow fell over the shattered window. A man stepped into the cabin, holding a suppressed pistol. He was dressed in a pristine gray suit, looking completely out of place in the blood-stained cabin.
"I did," the man said.
It was Captain Miller, Vance’s boss.

"Miller," Vance whispered, her hand trembling as she aimed her gun at him. "You're on the list."
"I wrote the list, Karen," Miller said smoothly, his eyes cold. "And now, I'm going to clean it up. Put the gun down, or the kids in the cellar are the first to go."
