Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Sacrifice

The tension in the room was thick enough to choke on. Miller stood there, the embodiment of the rot that had destroyed my sister's life.
"You won't get away with this, Miller," Vance said, her voice steady despite the sweat dripping down her temple. "The FBI already has the coordinates of this safehouse."
"They have the coordinates of a safehouse that is about to burn to the ground with four bodies inside," Miller replied, raising his weapon toward Vance. "A tragic accident. Rogue detective, greedy sister, and an unfortunate family caught in the crossfire."
Rachel looked at me, a sudden, fierce clarity in her eyes. It was the first time in her life she looked like a mother willing to do anything for her children.
"Sarah," she whispered. "I love you. Take care of my babies."
Before Miller could pull the trigger, Rachel threw herself forward with a primal scream. She tackled his legs, using every ounce of her remaining strength to throw him off balance.
Bang!
The gun went off, the sound muffled but devastating. Rachel collapsed, but her distraction was enough. Detective Vance fired twice, the bullets striking Miller square in the chest. He fell backward, his eyes wide with shock, before crashing through the wooden railing and lying still.
"Rachel!" I screamed, rushing to my sister’s side.
I knelt in the pool of her blood, lifting her head. She was breathing shallowly, her eyes fluttering.
"I'm sorry, Sarah," she whispered, her voice fading. "Be... be their mommy. Please. Tell them... I'm sorry."

"Rachel, stay with me! Don't you dare close your eyes!" I sobbed, pressing my hands against her wound. But her hand went limp in mine, and her breathing stopped.
My sister, the chaotic, reckless, beautiful mess of a woman, was gone. But she had saved us.
