Chapter 10 - Worth and Wealth

Three weeks later, the sun was shining brightly over the Denver skyline, melting the last remnants of the winter snow.

Inside the quiet room on the pediatric floor of the Children's Hospital, Jonah Reed sat up in bed, his left arm bound in a white sling. Beside him, sitting on the edge of the mattress, was eight-year-old Sophie. She had a small pink band-aid on her arm, her eyes bright and full of energy. Her heart procedure had been completed forty-eight hours ago, performed by the country's top pediatric surgeon, and it had been a resounding, complete success.

There was a soft knock on the open door.

Evelyn Mercer stepped into the room. She was dressed simply in a soft cream sweater and trousers, carrying a large wrapped box tied with a gold ribbon.

Jonah smiled warmly as he saw her. "Ms. Mercer."

"Jonah," she said gently, stepping inside. She looked down at the little girl, her expression softening completely. "You must be Sophie."

Sophie looked at her with wide eyes. "Are you the dinosaur lady from my dad's work?"

Evelyn let out a genuine, happy laugh—a sound Jonah had never heard from her before. "Something like that, sweetheart."

Evelyn set the box down on the bedside table and reached into her purse, pulling out a official document bearing the gold seal of Mercer Dynamics. She handed it to Jonah.

Jonah opened the folder. Inside was a revised employment contract and an equity transfer document.

"What is this?" Jonah asked, frowning slightly.

"That is your new contract," Evelyn explained, sitting on the chair beside his bed. "You are no longer my bodyguard, Jonah. You are the Chief Security Director for Mercer Dynamics nationwide, with full executive equity, a permanent seat on the ethics committee, and a salary that means you will never have to worry about a medical bill or a tailored suit ever again."

Jonah stared at the document, stunned. "Evelyn... I can't accept this. This is millions of dollars."

"It's not a gift," Evelyn said firmly, leaning forward and taking his hand—the first time she had ever willingly touched him without malice. "It's what you're worth. I spent my whole life thinking that wealth was measured by numbers in a bank account, stock prices, and power over other people. But watching you step in front of those bullets... watching you fight for your daughter... you showed me what real strength is."

She looked at Sophie, then back at Jonah, her brown eyes shining with deep respect and an unmistakable, warm affection.

"You saved my life, Jonah. But more than that, you saved me from becoming a person I would have hated. Mercer Dynamics needs a conscience, and I need a partner I can trust with my life."

Jonah looked down at the document, then up at Evelyn. The cold, distant wall that had once existed between them was gone completely, replaced by a deep, unbreakable bond born from shared fire and survival.

"I accept," Jonah said softly, a broad, genuine smile spreading across his face. "On one condition."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow, a hint of her old playful sharp wit returning. "And what's that?"

"If we ever go to another gala," Jonah said, gesturing to his sling, "you hold the champagne glass with two hands."

Evelyn laughed, a sound that filled the warm hospital room, as Sophie giggled along, grabbing the gold ribbon on her present. Outside the window, the sun beat down on the Rocky Mountains, bright, warm, and clear.
