Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The main boardroom on the forty-sixth floor of Mercer Dynamics was filled with nervous tension. Twelve board members sat around the long glass table, listening to Marcus Vance present a powerpoint on "Leadership Continuity in Crisis."
Marcus was wearing his finest suit, his hair combed perfectly, pretending to hide his delight behind a mask of solemn grief.
"Given the unfortunate weather conditions in the pass and the lack of communication from Ms. Mercer’s transport," Marcus was saying smoothly, "it is our duty to ensure market stability. According to section four of the corporate charter, in the event of executive incapacitation—"
The heavy double doors of the boardroom were suddenly thrown open with a loud bang that echoed off the glass walls.
Every head turned.
Evelyn Mercer stood in the doorway.
She was a sight that stunned the entire room into absolute silence. Her hair was tangled, her face was smudged with soot and dried blood, and her expensive wool coat was torn and covered in mud. But her posture was straighter than it had ever been, her eyes burning with a fierce, terrifying intensity.
Beside her stood two armed officers from the Denver Police Department.
Marcus went deathly pale, dropping his laser pointer onto the table. "Evelyn... you're... you're alive."
"To your great disappointment, Marcus," Evelyn said, her voice cutting through the room like a razor blade.
She walked slowly down the length of the long table, stopping directly opposite him. The board members scrambled out of her way, sensing the lethal energy radiating from her.
"You sent two men to murder me on Loveland Pass," Evelyn said calmly, laying a thick manila folder onto the table—the physical ledgers recovered from the Aspen server before her flight back. "You stole four million dollars from this company, and when you were exposed, you decided to commit treason."
"That's... that's absurd!" Marcus stammered, sweating profusely, looking around the room for support that was no longer there. "You're delirious! The storm must have—"
"The men you hired are currently in federal custody," the police officer standing at the door announced sternly. "They’ve already confessed, Mr. Vance. They gave us your name, your wire transfers, and your encrypted chat logs."
Marcus’s knees buckled, and he collapsed back into his leather chair, staring at Evelyn in sheer horror.
Evelyn leaned across the table, her face inches from his. "You thought you could buy power with stolen money and violent cowardly acts. But you forgot one thing, Marcus."
She pulled the worn, laminated photograph of Sophie out of her pocket and held it up for him to see.
"The man you tried to kill was a real protector. A father who fights for something that actually matters. You aren't even worthy to stand in his shadow."
Evelyn turned to the officers. "Take him out of my sight."
May you like
As the police cuffed Marcus and dragged him screaming from the room, Evelyn turned back to the remaining board members, who were all staring at her in complete awe.
"Meeting adjourned," Evelyn said quietly. "I have somewhere important to be."
