Chapter 6 - The Commission's Dinner

The Plaza Hotel’s Grand Ballroom was a sea of black tuxedos, diamonds, and tailored silk.

Under the massive crystal chandeliers, the Five Families of the New York underworld had gathered for the quarterly Commission assembly—a tradition stretching back nearly a century. Normally, these dinners were celebratory affairs, designed to maintain peace and partition territory.

Tonight, the room was thick with tension.

The sudden, violent collapse of the Bellini family over forty-eight hours had sent shockwaves through the syndicate. Rumors were flying: some said Arthur Bellini had tried to poison Vincent; others claimed Dominic Bellini had launched a rogue coup; but nobody knew the true story behind the canceled merger.

At the center head table sat the leaders of the four remaining families: Don Carmine Lucchese, an old man with silver hair and cold blue eyes; Don Sal Genovese; Don Victor Russo; and the empty, waiting seat at the center reserved for Vincent Moretti.

The heavy mahogany doors of the ballroom opened.

The hum of conversation vanished instantly. Two hundred eyes turned toward the entrance.

Vincent Moretti stepped into the room.

He wore a bespoke black tux, his dark hair combed back neatly, looking every inch the powerful, undisputed king of the New York waterfront. The cut on his cheekbone was barely visible beneath expert tailoring, but the sharp, lethal confidence in his stride told everyone in the room that he had returned from war victorious.

And on his arm sat me.

I wore a floor-length emerald green silk gown with a high lace neckline, designed by a top Italian fashion house that afternoon. My dark hair was swept up into an elegant chignon, secured with diamond pins. A brilliant three-carat emerald ring—an heirloom from the Moretti vault—shone on my left ring finger.

Behind us walked Paulie and Marco, looking sharp and vigilant, carrying the quiet authority of men who had cleared Pier 17 forty-eight hours prior.

Whispers erupted across the ballroom like wildfire.

"Who is she?" "Is that a Bellini?" "Where is Sophia?" "I heard she was a domestic..."

I kept my chin held high, forcing my spine straight, just as Vincent had instructed me in the limousine on the way over.

“You belong at my side, Nora,” he had told me, holding my gloved hand tightly. “Never look down. Let them wonder how a maid conquered the Don.”

Vincent led me up the raised dais toward the head table.

Don Carmine Lucchese stood up slowly, leaning on his ivory-handled cane. His piercing blue eyes scanned me from head to toe before resting on Vincent.

"Vincent," Carmine said, his voice like gravel scraping against stone. "You look well for a man who just incinerated his own marriage alliance."

"Carmine," Vincent replied smoothly, pulling out a chair for me at the head table before taking his own seat beside me. "The Bellini alliance was built on rotten wood. I simply cleared the timber."

Don Sal Genovese leaned forward, resting his heavy elbows on the white tablecloth. "Word on the street, Moretti, is that Arthur Bellini is in Colombia and Dominic is floating in the Hudson. You wiped out a historic family in two days. The Commission deserves an explanation."

Vincent reached into his inner breast pocket and pulled out a sleek silver flash drive, placing it gently on the center of the table.

"On this drive," Vincent said, his voice carrying easily across the silent room, "are forensic medical reports, digital wiretaps, and financial ledgers proving that Arthur and Dominic Bellini were conspiring to commit grand fraud against the Moretti Trust, forge medical documents regarding an heir, and secretly sell federal customs access to a syndicate out of Philadelphia."

A murmur of shock rippled through the older bosses. Selling syndicate access to an outside cartel was the ultimate violation of Commission rules.

"The Bellini family was compromised from the top down," Vincent continued coldly. "I executed the judgment required by our laws. Their ports, their ships, and their territories are now fully consolidated under the Moretti flag."

Carmine Lucchese looked at the silver drive, then nodded slowly. "If the proof is clear, then the Commission endorses your claim over Newark. But that leaves another matter, Vincent."

Carmine’s cold blue eyes locked onto me.

"Under our constitution," Carmine stated, "a Don who holds majority voting control over the waterfront must be married to a woman of recognized lineage to secure the succession. You brought a stranger to this table. Who is she?"

The room went dead silent. Every mobster, captain, and associate in the ballroom leaned forward, waiting for the humiliation.

Vincent slowly reached out and placed his hand over mine, his eyes scanning the crowd with fierce, terrifying pride.

"This," Vincent announced, his voice echoing off the gold-leaf ceiling, "is Nora Hayes. She is the woman who uncovered the Bellini treason when my own security detail failed to see it."

A sharp collective gasp echoed through the room.

"She is not a mobster's daughter," Vincent continued, standing up and drawing me up beside him. "She is not a pawn to be traded for port stock or gambling concessions. She is a woman of unquestionable integrity, loyalty, and courage. She saved my life and the future of my family."

He looked directly into Carmine’s eyes.

"She is my fiancée. And the next Don of the Moretti family will be born from her, and her alone."

For three agonizing seconds, nobody breathed.

Then, slowly, Don Carmine Lucchese let out a low, dry chuckle. He raised his heavy crystal glass of scotch into the air.

"To loyalty," Carmine toasted, his voice echoing across the ballroom. "In our world, Vincent... that is rarer than gold. Congratulations."

One by one, the other bosses stood up, raising their glasses in silent submission to the new reality. The Bellini challenge was dead. The Moretti reign was absolute.

I looked up at Vincent, my heart soaring with a love so deep it took my breath away. He looked down at me, a soft, rare smile warming his gray eyes as he brought my hand to his lips and kissed my knuckles in front of the entire underworld.
