Chapter 2 - The Uninvited Guest

I stepped back into the dining room just as my mother was shuffling out of the kitchen, carrying a heavy gravy boat in her scarred, trembling hands. She kept her chin tucked low toward her chest, her eyes fixed firmly on the polished hardwood floor, terrified of making eye contact with anyone.

"Oh, look, the maid finally brought the gravy!" Vanessa’s mother, Evelyn, scoffed loudly, holding up her china plate. "Honestly, Brandon, where on earth did you hire this old woman? She moves like a turtle. If I ran my house like this, my staff would be out on the street."

Brandon let out an embarrassed chuckle, taking a large gulp of his vintage cabernet. "Well, you know how hard it is to find reliable help these days, Evelyn. We keep her around out of charity, really. She has nowhere else to go."

Vanessa smirked, leaning over to pat Brandon’s knee. "Yes, we're practically running a retirement shelter here. But really, Maria, hurry up. Mr. and Mrs. Sterling need more wine."

My mother swallowed hard, nodding meekly. "Yes... right away..."

"Stop."

My voice cut through the warm, chatter-filled dining room like a butcher's cleaver.

The clinking of silverware instantly ceased. Six pairs of wealthy, aristocratic eyes snapped toward the doorway where I stood, my arms crossed over my chest.

Vanessa’s expression hardened from cheerful hostess to sharp annoyance in a fraction of a second. "Chloe? What are you doing? Can't you see we have important guests?"

I paid no attention to Vanessa. I walked directly over to my mother, gently took the heavy porcelain gravy boat out of her trembling hands, and set it down hard on the table—so hard that gravy sloshed over the rim, splattering across Vanessa’s pristine white linen tablecloth.

Vanessa gasped, springing up from her chair. "Look at what you did! That tablecloth is imported silk!"

"Mom," I said softly, ignoring Vanessa completely as I looked into my mother's wide, frightened eyes. "Go upstairs. Go sit in my old room."

My mother pulled back in panic, clutching her sweater sleeves tight over her bruised wrists. "Chloe, no... please... I have to serve the coffee... Vanessa will—"

"Mom," I repeated, my voice dropping into an unshakeable, authoritative tone that I had used on hundreds of critical ICU patients. "Go upstairs right now. Lock the door. I will handle this."

My mother looked at me, seeing a fire in my eyes she hadn't seen in six years. Slowly, with tears beginning to spill down her hollow cheeks, she turned and walked away from the dining room.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Brandon demanded, slamming his palm onto the table as he stood up. His face was flushed red with alcohol. "Chloe, you just got back from abroad! You don't walk into my house and start ordering people around!"

"Your house, Brandon?" I asked, taking a step toward the head of the table. A slight, dangerous smile touched the corners of my lips. "Is that what you told everyone here tonight? That this is your house?"

Vanessa stepped around the table, her high heels clicking sharply against the floor, her eyes narrowed into venomous slits. "Listen to me, you ungrateful little brat. You’ve been gone for six years living your little life overseas while Brandon and I built a home here! You come in here unannounced, dressed like a beggar, disrupting my dinner party, and now you're interfering with the household staff?!"

"Household staff?" I repeated, looking directly into Vanessa’s eyes. "You mean my mother? The woman who carried Brandon for nine months? The woman who gave up her entire life so he could go to college?"

"She is a senile, incompetent old woman!" Vanessa spat, her mask slipping completely in front of her friends. "She lives under our roof! She eats our food! The least she can do is scrub the floors and serve our guests! Now get out of my dining room before I call security!"

One of the guests, Mr. Sterling—a prominent real estate developer in the city—cleared his throat uncomfortably. "Ah, Brandon... is there some kind of family issue here we should leave you to address?"

"No, no, Arthur, please stay!" Evelyn chimed in quickly, waving her diamond-encrusted hand in the air. "It's just Brandon’s lower-class sister cause a scene. She’s always been jealous of Vanessa’s status."

"Jealous?" I laughed. The sound was cold, metallic, and devoid of any humor.

I reached into my blazer pocket and pulled out my smartphone, connecting it instantly to the high-end smart sound system mounted on the dining room wall—a system that Vanessa had proudly boasted was connected to every room in the house.

"What are you doing with your phone?" Brandon barked, moving toward me. "Give me that!"

I hit play.

Instantly, crystal-clear, high-definition audio filled the entire dining room, booming from the ceiling speakers with terrifying clarity.

CRASH!

The sound of shattering porcelain exploded through the room.

Then came Vanessa’s voice, sharp, furious, and demonic: "You useless old woman! Do you know how expensive that plate was?!"

Followed immediately by a loud, sickening SMACK!—the distinct sound of a open hand striking human flesh.

My mother's whimpering voice echoed through the speaker: "I... I'm sorry... I'll clean it up..."

And finally, Brandon’s bored, indifferent sigh: "Just hurry up, Mom. The guests are coming."

Silence crashed over the dining room like a lead weight.

Mr. and Mrs. Sterling stared at Vanessa in absolute horror. The other four guests sat frozen, their forks suspended halfway to their mouths, their faces completely drained of color.

Evelyn’s mouth dropped open in shock.

Vanessa went dead white. Her eyes darted wildly around the room, looking at her horrified friends, before locking onto me with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You... you recorded us?" Vanessa gasped, her voice trembling.

"I didn't record that," I said smoothly, tapping my phone screen to stop the playback. "The high-definition security camera mounted above the kitchen doorway recorded it—the camera that you installed last month to monitor my mother while you were away."

Brandon fell back into his chair as if he had been punched in the chest, his face turning an unsightly shade of gray. "Chloe... delete that... right now..."

"I won't be deleting anything, Brandon," I said, leaning over the table, looking at my brother with complete disgust. "Because that recording has already been forwarded to my attorney, the police department, and the state Department of Adult Protective Services."
