Chapter 9 - The Day of Justice

Six months later.

The high-ceilinged courtroom of the Cook County District Court was silent as Judge Rebecca Harris took her seat at the bench.

Today was the final sentencing hearing.

Both Brandon and Vanessa sat at the defense table, wearing dark navy prison uniforms. Six months in county jail had completely transformed them. Brandon had lost thirty pounds, his eyes hollow and sunken. Vanessa’s arrogance had been completely extinguished, replaced by a quiet, terrified tremor in her hands.

Sitting in the front row of the gallery was my mother, wearing an elegant navy dress, holding my hand tightly. Beside us sat Uncle Marcus and Arthur Sterling.

Judge Harris adjusted her glasses and looked down at the court documents.

"Before I pass sentence," Judge Harris announced, "the victim, Maria Vance, has requested to read a victim impact statement."

My mother stood up slowly.

For a second, I reached out to support her arm, but she gently patted my hand, offering me a confident smile. She walked up to the podium in front of the judge, pulled a small piece of paper from her purse, and adjusted the microphone.

Brandon couldn't even bring himself to look at her; he kept his face buried in his handcuffed hands, crying silently. Vanessa stared at the floor, trembling.

"My name is Maria Vance," my mother’s voice rang through the silent courtroom, strong and clear. "For two years, I lived in fear inside my own home. I was beaten, insulted, locked in dark rooms, and made to feel like I had no worth as a human being."

She paused, taking a deep breath.

"The people who did this to me were not strangers. One was my son—a boy I raised with love, a boy I sacrificed everything to protect. The other was his wife, whom I welcomed into my family with open arms."

She looked directly at Brandon.

"Brandon, I forgive you as your mother," she said softly. "But as a human being, I cannot shield you from the consequences of your cruelty. You chose money over love. You chose power over family. And you broke my heart."

My mother folded her paper, nodded respectfully to the judge, and walked calmly back to her seat beside me.

There wasn't a single dry eye in the courtroom gallery.

Judge Harris wiped a tear from her eye, her expression turning into hard steel as she looked down at the defense table.

"Brandon Vance and Vanessa Vance," Judge Harris declared, her voice booming through the chamber. "The crimes you committed against Maria Vance represent the absolute lowest form of human cruelty and greed. You exploited a loving mother, forged legal documents, stole hundreds of thousands of dollars, and inflicted physical horror upon a defenseless senior citizen."

Judge Harris picked up her legal pen.

"On the count of felony financial fraud and loan forgery, I sentence you both to eight years in state prison."

Vanessa gasped, collapsing sideways into her attorney's arms.

"On the count of felony elder abuse and aggravated assault," Judge Harris continued, "I sentence you both to an additional four years, to run consecutively. You will serve a total of twelve years in a maximum-security state facility, with no possibility of parole for the first eight years."

BANG!

The gavel struck the wooden block like a thunderclap.

"In addition," Judge Harris concluded, "full financial restitution in the amount of $228,000 is ordered to be paid to Maria Vance from the total liquidation of all personal assets belonging to the defendants."

"No! No! Please!" Vanessa shrieked as four court marshals stepped forward, grabbing her arms to drag her away toward the holding cells. "Brandon! Do something! Save me!"

Brandon didn't say a word. He was pulled to his feet, tears streaming down his face as he looked at my mother one last time.

"Mom... I'm sorry..." Brandon sobbed quietly as the heavy metal doors closed behind him.

My mother took a deep breath, closed her eyes for a brief moment, and then looked at me, a profound sense of closure washing over her face.

It was finally over.
