Chapter 10 - The Foundation of Love
As Elena walked into the garden, Lily saw her mother and let out a delighted squeal, sliding off Frank’s lap and toddling across the soft grass as fast as her little legs could carry her.
"Mommy! Mommy!" Lily giggled, throwing her little arms around Elena’s knees.
Elena knelt down on the grass, catching her daughter in a tight, loving embrace, lifting her up into the air as Lily dissolved into fits of happy laughter.
"Look at you, my big girl," Elena whispered, kissing her soft cheek.
Dominick walked over, standing beside them, looking down at the little girl who had once sat on his desk clutching his silver watch.
"She’s getting fast," Dominick smiled warmly. "She’s going to be running this restaurant before you know it."
"She’s going to run the world," Elena replied, looking at her daughter with fierce, unconditional love.
Mrs. Delgado walked over, placing a gentle hand on Elena’s shoulder. "You built a beautiful life, Elena. Your mother in heaven is watching you today with so much pride."
Elena looked around the garden—at Mrs. Delgado, who had loved them when they had nothing; at Frank, who had protected them in the dark; at Dominick, who had given them a future; and at Lily, the bright, beautiful light who had started it all.
A year ago, she had been a desperate, terrified mother standing barefoot in the snow, praying for a miracle to pay rent.
Now, she stood on an unshakeable foundation of love, security, and true family.

She looked up at the clear blue Chicago sky, held her daughter close against her heart, and took a deep, peaceful breath.
The fear was gone. The dark was over. They were finally, completely home.
