Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

Three days later.
The blizzard had finally passed, leaving Chicago bathed in bright, crisp winter sunlight.
The news headlines were dominated by a single story: “Massive Federal Sweep Topples Moretti Crime Syndicate; Senator Vance Indicted on Federal Bribery and Corruption Charges.”
Inside the quiet, sunlit penthouse apartment atop the Drake Hotel—a secure residence owned by Dominick’s private trust—Elena sat on a soft velvet sofa, wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket.
Lily was crawling happily across a thick wool rug, playing with a set of wooden building blocks, completely unaware of the nightmare she had survived.
A soft knock sounded at the door, and Dominick walked in. He was dressed in a sharp dark suit, looking rested, though the dark circles under his eyes spoke of three days of non-stop legal battles.
"How is she?" Dominick asked, sitting down in the armchair across from her.
"She’s perfect," Elena smiled softly, watching her daughter. "The pediatrician checked her yesterday. Not a scratch on her."
"Good," Dominick nodded. He pulled a thick leather folder from his jacket and placed it on the coffee table between them.
"What's this?" Elena asked.
"Your new life," Dominick said simply.
Elena opened the folder. Inside were official legal documents:
A deed to a charming, fully renovated three-bedroom house in Evanston, overlooking Lake Michigan.
An admission acceptance letter for Lily into one of the top private early-childhood academies in the state, fully funded through college by a private trust.
A corporate agreement transferring thirty percent ownership of Blackwell’s Restaurant Group to Elena Bennett, appointing her as the executive co-owner and head of culinary operations.
Elena stared at the papers, her breath catching in her throat. "Dominick... I can't accept this. This is millions of dollars."
"You risked your life to pull off the wiretap that saved my organization, Elena," Dominick said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "And more importantly, you reminded me why I started building this empire in the first place."
He stood up, walking over to the window, looking out over the blue waters of Lake Michigan.

"My sister died because she was alone," Dominick said softly. "You are not alone anymore, Elena. As long as I am breathing, you and Lily are family. And no one touches my family."
Tears blurred Elena’s vision, but for the first time in her life, they weren't tears of fear or desperation. They were tears of profound, overwhelming peace.
