Chapter 17 - A Mother’s Strength

Daniel set the iron chest on the evidence table. With the entire courtroom holding its collective breath, he unlocked it using the brass key from Rosy.

Inside lay pristine leather journals, handwritten by Clara’s great-grandfather, alongside the original purchase agreement signed by Julian Sterling’s own ancestor.

Clara stepped forward to address the bench, her posture proud and unshakeable despite her five-month pregnancy.

"Your Honor," Clara said clearly, her voice echoing with profound dignity. "These records prove that eighty years ago, Julian Sterling’s grandfather attempted to illegally seize town lands using forged lease documents. When he was caught, he abandoned the estate and left Rosy the doll with the town pharmacist as a pledge of peace and legal settlement."

Julian Sterling stood up, his pale face flushed with rage. "They are lying! Those journals are modern fabrications!"

Suddenly, Clara gasped, clutching her lower back as a sharp pain washed over her. Daniel caught her instantly, wrapping his arm around her waist as the courtroom erupted into chaos.

"Clara!" Daniel cried out in alarm.

"The baby..." Clara whispered, her forehead slick with cold sweat. "Daniel... the stress..."

Mira rushed to her mother's side, holding Clara's hand tightly. "Mommy! Stay strong! Look at me!"

Old Mr. Bowers stepped up, pointing an accusing finger at Julian Sterling. "Look at what you are doing to this family! You came here with greed in your heart, trying to destroy what a little girl saved with fifty dollars and a heart full of love!"

The emotional weight of the room crashed down upon Julian. The townspeople stood up in unison, shouting in support of the Vance family, their unified voices shaking the very rafters of the courthouse.
