Chapter 8 - The Siege of Pinecrest Ridge

The storm grew worse as night fell, turning into a howling blizzard that knocked out power lines across Mason Falls.

At nine o'clock, the high wrought-iron gates at the entrance of the Reeves Estate were smashed open by a heavy black pickup truck.

Three dark vehicles sped up the winding driveway, their headlights cutting through the thick sheet of falling snow. Four men armed with tactical rifles stepped out into the freezing night, led by a tall man in a leather trench coat—Dominic Rossi, Victor Rossi’s ruthless younger brother and chief enforcer.

Inside the estate, the emergency generator kicked on with a heavy hum, casting a soft golden glow through the library windows.

Daniel stood by the fireplace, holding an old double-barreled hunting shotgun. Behind him, in the hidden panic room built behind the library's oak bookshelves, Clara, Mira, and Rita were locked safely inside, watching the security monitors.

"Daniel Reeves!" Dominic Rossi’s voice echoed through the external intercom system. "Open the door! We’re here for the Vance documents and the girl’s signature on the transfer deed!"

Daniel flipped the switch on the wall intercom. "You're trespassing on private property, Rossi. The state police have already been notified."

Dominic laughed, a cruel, mocking sound over the speaker. "The state police are stuck in a five-car pileup on Highway 9 thanks to the blizzard, Reeves! They won't be here for two hours! Hand over the paper, or we burn this place down with you inside it!"

Through the security monitor, Clara watched in horror as one of Dominic’s men pulled a glass bottle filled with gasoline from his coat, lighting a rag at the top.

"Daniel, please!" Clara’s voice came through the internal wall speaker. "Don't fight them! Give them the paper! It’s just land! It’s not worth your life!"

Daniel looked at the monitor, his face lit by the golden glow of the fireplace.

"It’s not just land, Clara," Daniel said softly into his microphone. "It’s your mother’s legacy. It’s Mira’s future. And it’s the truth."

Daniel didn't wait for the petrol bomb to hit the house.

He stepped over to his desk, pressing a red button hidden beneath the mahogany trim.

Instantly, the estate’s automated agricultural sprinkler system—installed along the roofline to protect the historic house from forest fires—activated. High-pressure streams of freezing water exploded from dozens of nozzles along the roof, raining down on Dominic and his men like a tropical storm.

The lit petrol bomb was instantly doused, soaking Dominic’s men in freezing water and gasoline.

"What the hell?!" Dominic screamed, blinded by the sudden deluge of ice-cold water in sub-zero temperatures.

Before the men could recover, the heavy oak front doors flew open.

Daniel stepped onto the porch, raising his shotgun into the air and firing a thunderous blast into the night sky.

BANG!

The sound echoed off the mountains like a cannon shot.

At the same time, six local men—farmers, mechanics, and shopkeepers from Mason Falls, led by Rita’s husband and the town fire chief—emerged from the surrounding pine trees holding hunting rifles, flashlights, and pickup truck snowplows.

The townspeople had arrived.

"Put those guns down!" Fire Chief Higgins yelled through a bullhorn, his snowplow truck blocking the estate’s driveway, trapping Rossi’s vehicles. "You're in Mason Falls now, boys! We don't take kindly to city thugs harassing our people!"

Dominic Rossi looked around in utter shock. Surrounded by thirty angry locals armed with hunting gear and heavy machinery, soaked to the bone in freezing water, his men lowered their weapons in defeat.

Ten minutes later, the flashing red and blue lights of the state police cruisers finally cut through the snowstorm as the troopers arrived to take Dominic Rossi and his crew into federal custody.
