Chapter 7 - The Blood on the Salt Marsh

The abandoned meatpacking plant stood like a hulking, rusted leviathan amidst the tall, yellow reeds of the Absecon salt marshes. Cold wind whistled through shattered windows, carrying the foul stench of stagnant water and decaying iron.

Inside the dim, cavernous main floor, Claire was tied to a wooden chair in the center of the room. A single bare lightbulb hung from a frayed cord above her head, swaying gently in the draft.

Dominic Vance stood five feet away, pouring himself a cup of coffee from a thermos resting on a rusted oil drum. Four heavily armed guards sat around a folding table nearby, playing cards and laughing.

Claire sat upright, refusing to let her shoulders slump. Despite the terror gnawing at her insides, she kept her head held high, holding Vance’s cold gaze with absolute, unyielding defiance.

"You're wasting your time, Vance," Claire said, her voice echoing in the vast, empty space. "Luca isn't going to negotiate with you. You don't understand who he is."

Vance turned around, taking a slow sip of his coffee. "I know exactly who he is, sweetheart. He's a spoiled mob prince who thinks he owns the East Coast because his daddy was dangerous. But Luca has gotten soft. He cares about reputations, he cares about public optics, and most of all... he cares about you."

Vance walked up to Claire, leaning down until his scarred face was inches from hers.

"Care is weakness in our line of work," Vance sneered, reaching out to grab her chin. "The moment a man cares about a woman, he becomes easy to break."

Claire jerked her head away, spitting directly into Vance’s face. "He isn't weak. And you are a dead man walking."

Vance’s eyes flared with rage. He wiped his cheek with the back of his hand and raised his arm, his heavy palm aimed at her face.

BOOM.

The massive steel loading doors at the far end of the facility exploded inward in a shower of sparks, twisted metal, and blinding white light.

Flashbang grenades detonated in rapid succession, filling the cavernous room with deafening concussive blasts and dense, disorienting smoke.

The four guards playing cards didn't even have time to draw their weapons. Automatic gunfire erupted from the fog with surgical, terrifying precision, dropping all four men to the concrete floor in seconds.

Vance gasped, drawing his handgun and grabbing Claire from behind, using her chair as a shield as he aimed his weapon into the swirling smoke.

"Stay back!" Vance screamed, his voice cracking with sudden, hysterical panic. "I’ll kill her! I swear to God I’ll put a bullet through her head!"

Out of the white haze stepped a single figure.

Luca Moretti walked forward slowly, completely indifferent to the gun pointed at him. He wore a long black coat, his face completely calm, his pale gray eyes burning with an icy, terrifying fury that seemed to fill the entire room. In his right hand, he held a heavy black pistol, pointed casually at the floor.

"Put the gun down, Dominic," Luca said, his voice quiet, steady, and vibrating with absolute death.

"I want the dock contracts!" Vance shrieked, tightening his grip on Claire's shoulder, pressing the cold steel of his barrel against her temple. "Sign over the port facilities, or I blow her brains out right now!"

Claire looked at Luca through the gloom. She saw no fear in his eyes—only an absolute, unshakeable certainty.

"Look at me, Claire," Luca said softly, his voice cutting through Vance's hysterical screams like a warm ray of light.

Claire looked directly into Luca's gray eyes.

"Close your eyes," Luca whispered gently.

Claire closed her eyes, trusting him with her life.

In that fraction of a second, Luca raised his arm with blinding speed.

THWACK.

A silent, high-caliber round fired from Luca’s suppressed weapon struck Vance’s right shoulder with brutal precision. Vance screamed in agony, his hand shattering, his gun clattering uselessly onto the concrete floor.

Before Vance could react, Luca closed the distance in three explosive strides.

He grabbed Vance by the throat, lifting the heavy mobster off his feet with superhuman strength, and slammed him violently against the rusted steel pillar behind Claire's chair.

The sound of Vance’s ribs cracking echoed through the room.

Luca didn't shoot him. He dropped his gun to the floor, grabbed Vance by his lapels, and delivered three brutal, terrifying strikes to Vance’s face, reducing Philadelphia's most feared enforcer to a bleeding, broken heap on the cold floor.

Luca stood over him, breathing hard, his knuckles covered in blood. He looked down at the sobbing, broken man with total, absolute contempt.

"Touch her again," Luca whispered into Vance's bleeding ear, "and I won't just kill you, Dominic. I will tear down everything your family built in Philadelphia, stone by stone, until nothing remains but ash."

Luca turned away from the dying man, dismissing him entirely.

He dropped to his knees in front of Claire, pulling a tactical knife from his belt and quickly slicing through the ropes binding her wrists and ankles.

The moment the ropes fell away, Claire threw her arms around Luca’s neck, burying her face in the crook of his shoulder, shaking violently as tears finally spilled over her eyelashes.

Luca wrapped his broad arms tightly around her, holding her against his chest, his large hand gently cradling the back of her head, pulling her close as if he would never let her go.

"I’ve got you," Luca whispered, his voice thick with raw, trembling emotion, his cold armor completely shattering as he held her in the dark. "You're safe, Claire. I'm here. You're safe."
