Chapter 9 - The Harbor of Light

Six months passed, blossoming into a glorious, sun-drenched summer across the New Jersey coast.
Claire officially graduated at the top of her nursing class at Atlantic Shore University, receiving her diploma to a roaring ovation from her classmates and professors. She accepted a part-time position as a pediatric nurse at the local children's hospital—a role she executed with extraordinary compassion, healing children who had suffered trauma and illness.
The Villa Rosa had completely transformed. The once-cold, austere fortress was now filled with light, laughter, and the joyous sounds of baby Rose growing healthy and strong.
On a warm Saturday evening in July, the sun began to set over the Atlantic Ocean, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold, crimson, and lavender.
Claire stood on the manicured lawn overlooking the cliff, wearing a simple, breathtaking white silk dress that caught the gentle ocean breeze. She looked down at the sparkling blue water below, feeling a deep, unshakeable sense of happiness.
Footsteps sounded on the grass behind her.
Luca walked up beside her. He had traded his usual black suit for a tailored navy blazer and open-collared white shirt. In his arms, he held eight-month-old Rose, who was giggling happily, clutching a soft plush bear.
Luca handed the baby gently to Maria, who was standing nearby, smiling warmly as she took Rose inside for her evening bath.
Luca turned back to Claire, taking both of her hands into his own.
"You look breathtaking tonight, Claire," he said softly, his pale gray eyes shining with an intense, devoted warmth.
"It's a beautiful evening," Claire smiled, leaning her head against his chest, listening to the steady, reassuring beat of his heart. "Two years ago... I stood at a window on Baltic Avenue and wondered if I would ever see another sunset without fear."
Luca wrapped his broad arms around her waist, pulling her close against his chest.
"You'll never have to fear anything again, Claire," Luca promised softly into her hair. "Not as long as I breathe."
He stepped back slightly, reaching into his jacket pocket and pulling out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.
Claire’s breath caught in her throat.
Luca dropped to one knee on the soft green grass, looking up into her eyes with raw, absolute vulnerability.
He opened the box to reveal a stunning, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring, sparkling brightly under the golden rays of the setting sun.
"Claire," Luca said, his voice deep, rich, and trembling with honest emotion. "When I broke down your door on Baltic Avenue, I thought I was coming to save you. But over these past months, you saved me. You brought light into my dark life, you gave me a real home, and you showed me what it truly means to love someone."
He looked into her eyes, his gray gaze locking onto hers with absolute, eternal devotion.
"Will you do me the ultimate honor of becoming my wife? Will you marry me, Claire?"
Tears of pure, unadulterated joy filled Claire's eyes, sparkling like diamonds under the summer sky. She didn't hesitate for a single second.
"Yes," Claire whispered, her voice overflowing with love. "Yes, Luca! Absolutely yes!"

Luca stood up, a radiant smile breaking across his handsome face—a rare, genuine expression of pure joy that transformed him completely. He slid the diamond ring onto her finger, pulled her into his arms, and lifted her off her feet, spinning her around on the sunlit lawn as her joyous laughter echoed across the cliff.
He set her down gently and kissed her—a deep, passionate, reverent kiss that sealed their past wounds and welcomed a bright, beautiful future.
