Chapter 9 - The Final Reckoning
Before their new life could truly begin, one final legal formality remained.
Two weeks before the wedding, Daniel and Emily visited the State Women's Correctional Facility on the outskirts of the city.
Inside the stark, white visiting room divided by thick reinforced glass, Vanessa Vance sat waiting. She wore a faded orange jumpsuit, her hair pulled back into a messy ponytail, her face gaunt and pale. The arrogance, the designer dresses, and the cold beauty were entirely gone, leaving behind a bitter, broken woman.
She picked up the plastic telephone receiver as Daniel and Emily sat down on the other side of the glass.
"Came to gloat?" Vanessa’s bitter voice rasped through the speaker. "Came to see the fallen queen in her cage?"
"No, Vanessa," Emily said softly, picking up her own receiver. "We came to tell you that we're dropping the civil damages suit against your family."
Vanessa blinked, genuine shock crossing her pale face. "What? Why? My father and I tried to ruin you! We tried to send you to prison!"
"Your father is serving fifteen years for corporate fraud," Daniel said calmly into his phone. "And you are serving five years for felony framing and extortion. Justice has been served by the court. We don't need your family's remaining money."
Vanessa stared at Emily through the glass, her lower lip trembling as tears finally began to leak down her gaunt cheeks. "Why are you being nice to me, Emily? I hit you. I humiliated you in front of everyone. I hated you."
"Because holding onto hatred only poisons the person holding it," Emily replied gently. "I spent years thinking I was nobody because I had no money and no name. But I learned that your worth isn't defined by what people do to you, Vanessa. It's defined by how you choose to treat others."
Vanessa slowly set her head against the glass, weeping softly. "I'm sorry, Emily... I'm so sorry."

Emily pressed her hand against the glass opposite Vanessa's face. "I forgive you, Vanessa. Work your time, get your life back, and find a way to be happy without tearing others down."
As Daniel and Emily stood up and walked out of the prison facility into the warm afternoon sunlight, Emily felt a profound, weightless freedom settle into her chest. The final chain of the past had been broken.
