Chapter 5 - The Council Ambush

Friday morning arrived under a crisp, bright autumn sky in Nashville.
The Metropolitan City Council Chamber was packed to capacity. Developers, reporters, city officials, and investors filled the grand mahogany pews. At stake was the $50 million contract to redesign the city's commercial waterfront—a project that would define the regional economy for the next decade.
Nathan arrived early, wearing a tailored navy suit, flanked by David Vance and two associates. He sat on the left side of the aisle, calm and composed.
Ten minutes later, Julian Ross entered the chamber, accompanied by his legal team and, to the shock of the crowd, Claire Whitmore.
Claire was dressed in an understated lavender silk suit, holding her head high, acting every bit the wronged wife seeking justice. She caught Nathan’s eye across the aisle and offered a cold, triumphant smile. She believed she had won. She believed Project Helios was about to destroy Nathan's bid forever.
"Look at her," David whispered beside Nathan. "She thinks she's about to deliver the execution blow."
"Let her dream," Nathan murmured.
The Council Chairman slammed the gavel. "We will now hear final bidding presentations for the Riverfront Development Initiative. We will begin with Ross Capital, represented by Mr. Julian Ross."
Julian stepped up to the podium, adjusting his silk tie, exuding supreme confidence. He loaded his digital presentation onto the chamber's giant screens.
"Members of the council," Julian began, his voice echoing smoothly. "Ross Capital is proud to present a revolutionary, eco-efficient structural model. We have restructured our entire engineering cost framework to deliver this project at a groundbreaking figure: $38.5 million—nearly $7 million below our nearest competitor's estimated capability."
Gasps filled the room. $38.5 million was an impossibly low figure—precisely the traps set in the fake Project Helios document.
Julian pulled up a slide featuring complex structural blueprints and financial tables. "As you can see from our proprietary resource estimates—specifically labeled here under our Helios Engineering Model—we can achieve this without sacrificing structural integrity."
Nathan leaned back in his chair and nodded slowly to David Vance.
David stood up immediately. "Mr. Chairman! Point of order!"
The Chairman frowned, looking over his spectacles. "Mr. Vance, this is not a cross-examination period. State your point."
"Mr. Chairman," David said loudly, his voice commanding the absolute attention of the entire room, "Ross Capital’s presentation contains stolen proprietary trade secrets belonging exclusively to Whitmore Development."
A wave of loud whispers erupted across the gallery. Reporters leaned forward, phone cameras flashing.
Julian Ross’s face turned bright red. "This is outrageous! Mr. Vance is making desperate, unfounded accusations because his client knows he’s been outmaneuvered!"
"Is that so, Mr. Ross?" David said smoothly, walking down the center aisle while holding a sleek black tablet. "Then perhaps you can explain why the file you just displayed—which you call your 'proprietary' model—contains a hidden digital watermark registered to Whitmore Development’s private servers at 11:42 PM on Wednesday night?"
David tapped his tablet, casting a document onto the secondary council screens.
It showed a clear, line-by-line digital forensic trace showing the exact IP address that had downloaded the Project Helios file. The IP address belonged directly to a laptop registered under the name of Claire Whitmore, accessed from a penthouse apartment paid for by Ross Capital.
Claire’s breath hitched violently. She half-stood from her seat, her eyes wide with terror as her image was projected onto the screens alongside the server logs.
"Furthermore," David continued relentlessly, turning to face the council members, "the financial numbers Mr. Ross just presented are completely fictional. They were planted by our cybersecurity team to track an ongoing corporate espionage scheme. If Ross Capital attempts to build at that figure, the project will go bankrupt within six months."
Julian turned on Claire, his composure completely shattering. "You told me that file was clean! You said he didn't know!"
"Julian, shut up!" Claire shrieked, forgetting where she was.
"Silence! Order in the chamber!" the Chairman shouted, slamming his gavel repeatedly.
Two uniformed Metro Police officers, who had been quietly standing near the back doors under Marcus's arrangement, stepped forward down the aisle.
"Claire Whitmore and Julian Ross," the lead officer declared, pulling out handcuffs. "You are under arrest for federal corporate espionage, conspiracy to steal trade secrets, and unauthorized computer access."
The gallery burst into absolute chaos. News cameras swarmed as Claire screamed, thrashing against the officers as steel cuffs clicked around her manicured wrists.
"Nathan! Tell them to stop!" Claire shrieked as she was dragged down the aisle, her expensive hair falling wildly over her face. "Nathan! You ruined me! You ruined my life!"
Nathan didn't stand up. He didn't shout back. He simply looked at her with cool, unyielding detachment as she was pulled out into the hallway, her frantic screams fading into the distance.

The Chairman banged his gavel once more, staring down at Nathan with immense respect. "Mr. Whitmore... it appears your bid is the only valid, legal proposal before this council today. We will take a brief recess before formal contract execution."
Nathan stood, buttoning his suit jacket, and looked at David. "Let's go home. Mom and Lily are waiting."
