Chapter 8 - Justice Unravels

Victor Blake realized too late that he was no longer the hunter.
The red dot centered over his sternum flared slightly against his dark jacket. Before he could squeeze the trigger of his revolver, a silenced rifle shot cracked through the night air—THWIP!
The high-velocity round struck Blake’s gun hand with lethal precision. The revolver shattered, exploding out of his grip, sending him sprawling backward onto the rusted catwalk with a roar of agonizing pain.
"LILY! GO LOW!" Nathan bellowed.
Nathan sprinted forward like a panther, leaping up the rotting wooden stairs of the mill three at a time.
Marcus’s tactical team burst from the forest shadow, flashlights blinding the night, securing the lower entrances in seconds. "SECURE! BUILDING CLEAR!"
Nathan reached the second-floor catwalk, dropped to his knees, and pulled Lily into his arms. He quickly sliced through her ropes with his pocket knife and gently peeled the duct tape from her mouth.
"Mr. Nathan!" Lily sobbed, throwing her tiny arms around his neck, burying her wet face into his suit shoulder. "I was so scared! The bad man took me from the garden!"
"I know, baby, I know," Nathan whispered, holding her so tight he could feel her rapid, tiny heart beating against his chest. He wrapped his wool coat around her shivering shoulders and lifted her into his arms. "You're safe now. I've got you."
On the floor nearby, Blake was groaning, clutching his shattered hand as Marcus Vance pinned him to the steel grate with a heavy tactical boot, slapping steel cuffs onto his wrists.
"He'll live," Marcus said, looking up at Nathan with a sharp nod. "And he's going to talk to the feds to avoid a lifetime in maximum security."
Ten minutes later, flashing red and blue lights illuminated the riverbank as three state police cruisers and an ambulance roared into the clearing.
Nathan walked down the mill steps carrying Lily wrapped in his coat. He refused to let the paramedics take her until she was placed directly into her mother’s arms.
A police sedan screeched to a halt, and Maria tumbled out of the back seat, her hair wild, her face pale.
"LILY!" Maria shrieked.
"MOMMY!"
Nathan set the child down, and Maria dropped to her knees, burying her daughter in a desperate, weeping embrace. They held each other in the mud under the flashing police lights, crying out weeks of terror, pain, and relief.
Nathan stood over them, his clothes covered in mud and grease, watching the mother and child with tears shining in his own dark eyes.
David Vance walked up beside Nathan, handing him a warm cup of coffee from a deputy’s thermos. "The state troopers just raided the penthouse apartment where Claire was hiding her secondary files. They found Blake's wire transfer receipts and a recorded phone call log from the jail."
Nathan took a slow sip of the hot coffee. "What does that mean for Claire?"
David smiled—a cold, grim smile of total legal victory. "It means Claire Whitmore is no longer just facing corporate fraud and elder abuse. She is facing federal charges of solicitation of kidnapping, attempted murder, and extortion. She’s looking at twenty-five years to life in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole."
"And Julian?"
"Julian turned state's evidence thirty minutes ago," David said. "He gave up every secret bank account Claire owned to save his own skin. She has nothing left, Nathan. Not a dime. Not a friend. Not a defense."

Nathan looked back at Maria, who was kissing Lily’s cheeks, laughing through her tears as the paramedics wrapped them both in warm foil blankets.
"Good," Nathan whispered. "Now let's take my family home."
