Chapter 2 - The Heiress Unmasked

The silence in the hospital room became heavy enough to suffocate a man.
Vincent stared from the legal documents in his hand back to Naomi, whose expression remained completely serene.
"What is this?" Vincent growled, flicking his gaze to the uniformed officers standing by the door. "Naomi, what kind of joke is this? You're an orphan. You grew up in foster care. I picked you up when you were nothing!"
Arthur Pendelton stepped between Vincent and the bed, his demeanor oozing multi-billion-dollar legal power.
"Mr. Caruso, watch your tongue," Pendelton warned strictly. "In 2012, following the tragic plane crash that took the lives of billionaire real estate magnate Marcus Sterling and his wife, their sole seven-year-old heiress was placed under anonymous protective custody to shield her from corporate cartels and syndicate extortion."
Vincent’s face drained of color. His eyes widened in absolute shock.
"Naomi Sterling was placed in the state foster system under strict court anonymity," Pendelton continued smoothly. "Her identity was sealed until her twenty-fifth birthday—which occurred three weeks ago. Her trust, controlling Sterling Global Developments, three major shipping ports in the Midwest, and an eighty-billion-dollar liquid asset portfolio, was fully unlocked yesterday."
Vincent felt the ground beneath his feet shake.
For five years, he had treated Naomi like a quiet, grateful mouse he had rescued from poverty. He had used his wealth to lord over her, making her feel dependent on his protection, his money, and his lifestyle. He had assumed she would endure his arrogance and his open infidelities because she had nowhere else to go.
"No..." Vincent muttered, staring at Naomi. "You're lying. You would have told me!"
Naomi looked at him, her eyes clear and unbothered. "I was going to tell you, Vincent. Last night. I had the trust documents in my bag. I was going to hand over control of the Midwest shipping ports to your family business as an anniversary gift."
Vincent gasped, taking a sudden step forward. "Naomi—"
"But then I called you," Naomi said quietly. "And you told me that Bianca’s panic attack was more important than the birth of your children. You told me I was 'different' because I could handle being abandoned."
She pointed to the paperwork Arthur had handed him.
"Those are preliminary divorce filings, a temporary restraining order restricting you from this hospital floor, and an immediate freeze on all joint venture accounts linked between the Caruso Syndicate and Sterling Global maritime properties."
Vincent's phone suddenly began ringing frantically in his pocket. He ignored it, but Arthur Pendelton tapped his watch.
"I suggest you answer that, Mr. Caruso. Your uncle, Senior Godfather Salvatore Caruso, is likely trying to contact you."
Vincent pulled out his phone with trembling fingers and answered.
"Vincent!" his uncle Salvatore’s voice roared through the speaker, so loud that everyone in the room heard it. "What the hell did you do?! Our commercial shipping permits at Port Chicago were just revoked! The bank just canceled our twenty-million-dollar credit line! Who the hell is Naomi Sterling?!"
Vincent’s throat felt bone dry. He couldn't speak. He couldn't move.
"Answer me, Vincent!" Salvatore bellowed. "The Sterling Trust is bankrupting our logistics division! They're pulling all our permits!"
Naomi looked at Vincent, her voice steady and quiet. "Leave my room, Vincent."

The two police officers stepped forward. "Sir, you need to step outside now."
Vincent looked at Naomi, a mixture of horror, regret, and sudden, terrifying realization washing over him. The helpless orphan girl he thought he owned had just dismantled his entire life with a single phone call.
