Chapter 10 - The Horizon of Daylight

The clock on the Chicago harbor struck midnight, the deep, rhythmic chimes echoing out over the calm, dark waters of Lake Michigan.

Anna and Dominic stood on the private terrace of his estate in the North Shore, the city skyline forming a distant, glittering wall of gold and diamond lights against the velvet sky. A gentle spring rain was falling, tapping softly against the glass awning above them, carrying the sweet scent of blooming lilacs and wet earth.

Dominic stood behind her, his large wool overcoat wrapped around both of their shoulders, his powerful arms securing her against his chest. He had removed his tie, his linen shirt open at the collar, his lips brushing the side of her neck with a rare, emotional tenderness.

"Are you cold?" he whispered into her hair.

"No," Anna smiled, leaning her back completely against his solid chest, her fingers interlocking with his over her waist. "I am completely warm."

He reached into his pocket, his fingers sliding a simple, flawless emerald ring onto her finger—a ring cut from a stone that carried no blood, no history of corporate contracts, no secrets behind locked doors. It was a token of pure, unyielding survival.

"I spent my entire life believing that darkness was the only way to keep what belonged to me, Anna," Dominic said, his voice dropping into a rough baritone that shook her to her soul. "But when you called me from that patio six months ago, you didn't ask for a monster. You asked for a savior. I promise to spend the rest of my life keeping the light on for you."

Anna turned in his embrace, looking up into the striking gray eyes of the man who had torn his entire empire upside down to protect her name. The bridesmaid who had bled behind the brick walls of the country club had found a fortune that couldn't be counted in banking ledgers. The sovereign who had lived in a cold fortress of power had finally found a home.

As the first embers of the morning sun began to break across the lake, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and fire, the shadows of the psychological war disappeared for good, and their eternal dawn had finally, beautifully arrived.
