Chapter 8 - The Reconstruction of the Heart

With Grant Ashford permanently remanded to a maximum-security state psychiatric facility pending trial for attempted murder, aggravated burglary, and corporate racketeering, the final shadow over Anna’s life had completely dissolved.

By the spring of 2026, the city of Chicago looked different. The winter snows had melted away, leaving the streets bright and alive with the pink blossoms of the cherry trees along the riverwalk.

Anna stood on the balcony of a new penthouse apartment—this one registered openly in her own name—looking out over the glittering blue expanse of Lake Michigan. She was wearing a simple white sundress, her skin sun-kissed and healthy, her laughter a frequent, easy sound that echoed over the open terrace.

"The lawyers finished the final decree this morning, Anna," a deep voice said from the open glass doors.

Dominic walked out onto the balcony, wearing a simple gray linen shirt and trousers, looking softer and more relaxed than she had ever seen him. He handed her a thin manila envelope containing the absolute dissolution of her marriage to Grant. She was officially, legally free.

"Thank you, Dominic," she whispered, setting the envelope down on the patio table before turning to face him.

"Don't thank me for giving you what you already owned, Anna," Dominic said softly, stepping closer until his large hands settled over her waist. This time, his touch didn't carry an implicit threat; it was a warm, possessive anchor that pulled her safely against his chest. "You fought the war. I just managed the logistics."

Anna reached up, her fingers sliding into his dark hair, her green eyes locking onto his gray ones with an intensity that made his breath hitch. "I ran from you three years ago because I was afraid of the dark, Dominic. I thought safety meant respectability. I thought a man who built hospitals couldn't be a monster."

"And what do you think now?" he murmured, his lips brushing against her forehead.

"I think safety isn't about what a man does in the daylight," Anna said, her voice dropping into an intimate, intense register that shook him to his core. "Safety is about who comes to get you when the world goes silent. It’s about the man who stands between you and the storm, even if he has to burn the city down to do it."
