Chapter 3 - The Fortress on the Cliff

The transfer happened under the cover of a torrential midnight downpour.

Elena was placed in an armored medical van, strapped securely to a gurney alongside an attending physician, while Roman and Amelia rode in the lead SUV of a four-vehicle decoy convoy.

When the van finally cleared the massive iron gates of the Vale estate in the coastal hills of Grayhaven, Elena looked out the tinted window. The estate was built like a modern citadel on a high cliff overlooking the crashing black waves of the Atlantic. High concrete walls, thermal surveillance towers, and heavily armed men in dark tactical gear lined the perimeter.

It wasn't a home. It was a golden cage.

The medical team wheeled Elena into a ground-floor wing that had been completely converted into a state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility. Soft yellow lights, ocean views, and plush furniture made it look more like a luxury resort than a hospital, yet the steel-reinforced doors reminded her of her absolute captivity.

An hour later, the bedroom door opened gently.

Elena was sitting up in bed, her arms trembling as she practiced squeezing a small rubber exercise ball to regain motor control in her hands.

Roman walked in carrying Amelia. The little girl had been changed into a dry white nightgown, her dark curls damp from a quick bath. She held her stuffed fox tightly, resting her chin on Roman’s shoulder.

"She wouldn't go to sleep," Roman said softly, stopping near the edge of the rug. "She kept asking if the lady in the yellow coat was still here."

Elena’s heart pounded against her ribs. She dropped the rubber ball, reaching her hands out slowly, afraid that any sudden movement would scare the child.

"Amelia..." Elena whispered, her voice cracking with emotion. "Sweetheart..."

Amelia looked at her with wide, intelligent gray-blue eyes—the exact shade of Roman’s. She looked from Elena’s outstretched hands up to Roman’s face.

"Is that Mama?" Amelia asked in a small, tentative voice.

Roman knelt beside the bed, bringing Amelia eye-level with Elena. "Yes, Lia. That’s your mama. She’s been sleeping for a very long time, but she’s awake now."

Amelia leaned forward cautiously. She reached out one chubby, warm finger and touched the bandage on Elena’s wrist, then pushed back a strand of dark hair from Elena’s cheek.

"Why were you sleeping?" Amelia asked softly.

Tears spilled over Elena’s eyelashes, hot and unstoppable. She cupped Amelia’s tiny face in her trembling hands, pulling her gently forward until their foreheads touched. The scent of baby shampoo and vanilla filled Elena’s senses, wiping away three years of cold, sterile hospital air.

"I was waiting for you," Elena sobbed quietly. "I’m so sorry I was gone for so long, my baby... I’m so sorry."

Amelia didn't pull away. Instead, she wrapped her small arms around Elena’s neck, burying her face into Elena’s shoulder.

Roman watched them from his knees beside the bed. His face remained carved from stone, but his hands trembled slightly as he rested them on the edge of the mattress, watching the mother and daughter he had kept safe at the cost of his own soul finally unite.

"I’ll leave you two alone," Roman said, his voice unusually raspy as he prepared to stand up.

"No," Elena said suddenly, looking up at him through her tears.

Roman paused, surprised.

"Tell me who pushed me," Elena demanded, her tone shifting from maternal warmth to lethal severity. "I want the name, Roman. No more secrets."

Roman looked at her for a long time, then reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out a worn silver pocket watch—an heirloom that had once belonged to his late father.

"The man who ordered the hit on you was Julian Moretti," Roman said flatly. "The head of the Moretti syndicate. But the person who physically pushed you down those stairs... was someone inside this house."

Elena’s blood turned to ice. "Inside this house?"

"My half-brother, Dominic," Roman revealed coldly. "And until six hours ago, I thought I had executed him two years ago. But the gunman I shot in the hospital corridor today... was carrying Dominic’s personal signet ring."
