Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Light

Three years later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the coastal estate in Chatham.
The estate grounds had been completely transformed. The heavy concrete guard towers had been dismantled and replaced with rolling green gardens, fruit orchards, and a large wooden playground overlooking the Atlantic ocean.
On the back lawn, seven-year-old Amelia was teaching her younger brother—two-year-old Leo—how to kick a soccer ball across the grass. Leo had Roman’s dark hair and Elena’s bright, mischievous smile.
"Pass it to me, Leo!" Amelia shouted happily, her dark curls fluttering in the breeze.
Little Leo let out a toddler giggle, kicking the ball clumsily toward his older sister before falling onto the soft grass, laughing hysterically.
Sitting on the porch swing watching them were Roman and Elena.
Elena leaned her head comfortably against Roman’s shoulder, his broad arm wrapped around her waist, holding her close. She wore a comfortable sundress, her skin glowing with health and deep contentment.
Roman held a glass of iced tea, watching his children play with a look of profound, blissful peace that had forever erased the cold mob boss he had once been.
"Look at them," Elena whispered softly, resting her hand on Roman’s chest, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart beneath his shirt.
"They have your spirit," Roman smiled, turning his head to kiss the top of her hair. "Lia is already trying to run the whole house, and Leo follows her everywhere."
"He follows her because he knows she’ll protect him," Elena said warmly, looking at Roman. "Just like her father."
Roman looked at Elena, his gray-blue eyes filled with an unshakeable, infinite love. He reached down, cupping her face gently in his hand, and brought his lips to hers in a tender, lingering kiss.

Down on the lawn, Amelia scored a goal into the small wooden net, lifting her arms in triumph as little Leo clapped his chubby hands, shouting, "Mama! Papa! Look!"
Elena and Roman laughed together, stepping off the porch hand-in-hand, walking out into the bright, golden sunlight toward their children—a family no longer defined by the shadows of the past, but bound forever by an unbroken, triumphant light.
