Chapter 10 - The Warmth of Home

That evening, a grand outdoor dinner was set up on the estate’s rear terrace overlooking Lake Michigan.
The sun was setting, painting the sky in breathtaking hues of amber, rose, and soft violet. The cold, sterile white stone of the mansion reflected the warm light of hanging lantern strings that stretched across the garden trees.
Sitting around the large wooden table were Dominic, Clara, Noah, Tyler, and Clara’s mother, who had finally been able to stop working three shifts and rest.
For the first time in memory, the mansion was filled with real music, warm laughter, and the bustling sound of a true family enjoying a meal together.
After dinner, as Tyler and Clara’s mother helped Noah catch fireflies near the garden fountain, Dominic walked over to the stone balustrade where Clara was standing, looking out at the calm, dark waters of the lake.
He wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her softly against his side. Clara leaned into his warmth, resting her head against his shoulder.
"A year ago, I thought this house was cursed," Dominic whispered into the cool evening breeze. "I thought I was doomed to live in the dark forever, watching my son fade away."
Clara turned slightly, looking up into his handsome, peaceful face. "Sometimes, the darkest houses just need someone to open a window and let the light in."
Dominic smiled, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, velvet box.
Clara’s breath hitched.
He didn't drop to his knee like a corporate theatrical gesture; he simply opened the box, revealing a simple, breathtaking platinum ring set with a clear, brilliant sapphire—the exact shade of blue Noah loved so much.
"You came into this house as a maid trying to save your brother," Dominic said, his voice rich with deep emotion. "But you ended up saving all of us. I don't want a nanny for my son, Clara. And I don't want a maid in my house. I want you... as my wife. If you'll have us."
Clara looked from the glowing sapphire to Dominic’s warm, devoted eyes, and then over at Noah, who was running toward them across the lawn, holding a glowing firefly jar in his hands.
"Look, Clara! Look, Papa!" Noah called out, his voice filled with pure, untainted joy. "I caught one!"
Clara’s heart swelled with a happiness so deep and complete that tears of joy finally spilled over her lashes. She looked back up at Dominic, wrapped her arms around his neck, and pulled him down into a tender, passionate kiss.
"Yes," Clara whispered against his lips as the warm evening breeze blew off the lake. "Yes, Dominic. A thousand times yes."

Noah reached them, pulling on both their clothes until they crouched down to his level, wrapping their arms around him in a tight, unbroken embrace.
The dark mansion on the lake was no longer a place of hidden terror, silent tears, or feared secrets. It was, finally and forever, a home filled with light, laughter, and an love that could never be broken.
