Chapter 8 - The Shadow Falls

Dominic stepped out of the boiler room, sliding the reinforced steel door shut behind him and locking it with his master key card.

Clara and Noah were left in the warm, hum of the boiler room. Noah sat on a wooden crate, holding Clara’s hand tightly, no longer trembling. The presence of his father and the security of Clara’s gentle hold had finally given him the anchor he needed.

Above them, the muted sounds of tactical breach charges and heavy gunfire rattled the ceiling pipes.

Dominic Vale was no longer just a businessman protecting his assets; he was a father tearing down the monsters who had broken his family.

In the main wine cellar outside the boiler room, Julian Vance and Mrs. Hargrove were trying to reach the emergency underground exit leading to the garage, guarded by three of Julian's remaining mercenaries.

"Where is the boy?!" Julian roared, grabbing Mrs. Hargrove by the lapel of her suit. "You said she was trapped in the bedroom!"

"She took the laundry chute, you fool!" Mrs. Hargrove snapped back, her hair wild and unspooled. "We need to get out of here before Vale’s main force—"

A single gunshot echoed through the concrete cavern of the cellar.

Julian’s lead mercenary dropped to the floor, disarmed and unconscious before he even realized where the shot had come from.

Out of the shadows of the arched stone corridor stepped Dominic Vale. He moved with cold, terrifying precision, two elite tactical guards advancing behind him with suppressed rifles aimed directly at the remaining men.

Within ten seconds, Julian's remaining bodyguards dropped their weapons and raised their hands in surrender.

Julian stumbled backward against a wine rack, his face draining of all color. "Dominic... wait! Listen to me! It was Hargrove’s idea! She came to me two years ago—"

"Shut your mouth, Julian," Dominic said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stepped closer, pointing his weapon at Julian’s chest. "My wife trusted you. She was your sister. And you killed her for five percent of a land development firm."

"She was going to ruin everything!" Julian screamed, his composure completely shattering. "She found the off-shore accounts! She was going to go to the federal prosecutors! I had no choice!"

Mrs. Hargrove tried to slip toward the dark service corridor behind them, but two heavy security officers grabbed her arms, pinning her against the damp brick wall.

"You're going to spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary, Julian," Dominic said, his eyes cold as ice. "And every day you are in there, you will remember that it was a twenty-two-year-old maid from Cicero who brought your entire empire down."

Dominic nodded to his head of security. "Take them away. Hand them directly to the state police team waiting at the gates."
