Chapter 6 - The Verdict of Protection

Judge Miriam Delgado was a sixty-year-old woman with silver hair, sharp dark eyes, and a reputation for having zero tolerance for nonsense in her courtroom.

She sat behind the high mahogany bench, her eyes scanning the documents laid out before her. On her right sat Brenda Wilson and her trembling attorney. On her left sat Evelyn Reed, William Parker, Emma, and Noah, who was being quietly rocked by Marcus in the front row of the gallery.

"Let me get this straight," Judge Delgado said, leaning forward and resting her elbows on the bench. "Mrs. Wilson, you filed an emergency petition claiming that the infant, Noah, was abducted from Apartment 4B by Mr. Parker?"

"Yes, Your Honor!" Briggs interjected quickly. "A rich man walked into a low-income apartment and removed two minors without legal authorization—"

"Mr. Briggs," Judge Delgado interrupted, her voice dangerously calm. "Do you know what I have sitting on my desk right now?"

Briggs blinked. "No, Your Honor."

"I have a sworn medical affidavit from Dr. Richard Vance, Chief of Cardiology at Mount Sinai," Judge Delgado stated, picking up a paper with a official gold seal. "He states under penalty of perjury that when Mr. Parker entered Apartment 4B, the children's grandmother, Martha Reynolds, was minutes away from death due to lack of medication. He also states that the child, Noah, was suffering from acute malnutrition."

She set the paper down and glared at Brenda Wilson.

"Furthermore," Judge Delgado continued, "I have a police report from the 28th Precinct indicating that Mrs. Wilson, you were caught on ATM surveillance footage three weeks ago standing behind Martha Reynolds when her card was compromised—an incident that is currently being investigated as grand larceny targeting a vulnerable senior."

Brenda let out a small, terrified squeak. "That... that wasn't me! The camera was blurry!"

"The footage is in four-thousand-pixel high-definition, Mrs. Wilson," Evelyn Reed said smoothly, sliding a USB drive onto the clerk’s desk. "Compliments of Parker Capital's digital forensic team."

Judge Delgado struck her wooden gavel against the sound block with a loud, echoic BANG.

"I have seen enough," Judge Delgado declared. "The petition for temporary custody filed by Brenda Wilson is denied with prejudice. I am ordering the NYPD officers present in this courtroom to take Mrs. Wilson into custody immediately pending formal charges of grand larceny, child endangerment, and fraud."

Two uniformed officers stepped forward instantly, snapping handcuffs around Brenda’s wrists as she began to scream and cry, dragging her out through the side doors of the courtroom.

The room fell quiet again.

Judge Delgado turned her gaze toward William Parker and Emma. Her sharp expression softened significantly.

"Mr. Parker," Judge Delgado said gently. "You have no legal obligation to these children. You are a private citizen who happened to walk into a restaurant where Emma asked for food. Why are you doing this?"

William stood up. He looked at Judge Delgado, then down at Emma, who was holding his sleeve with her small fingers.

"Your Honor," William said, his voice deep and steady. "Fifteen years ago, my younger sister died because nobody stopped to notice that our family was drowning. Yesterday, Emma Reynolds walked into a room full of wealthy people, held her head high, and fought for her family's survival with more grace and bravery than I have seen in any corporate boardroom in America."

He paused, taking a slow breath.

"I cannot change what happened to my sister," William continued softly. "But I have the means, the resources, and the desire to make sure that Emma, Noah, and Martha Reynolds never have to worry about a meal, a bill, or a roof over their heads ever again. I am requesting emergency temporary legal guardianship of both children until Martha Reynolds is fully recovered and able to consent to a permanent joint custody arrangement."

Judge Delgado looked at William for a long, quiet moment. Then she looked at Emma.

"Emma," Judge Delgado asked softly. "Is this what you want?"

Emma looked up at William—the giant man in the charcoal suit who had shielded her from the rain, saved her grandmother’s life, bought formula for Noah, and stood like a mountain between her and the people who tried to hurt them.

"Yes, Your Honor," Emma said, tears shining in her blue eyes. "He kept his promise."

Judge Delgado smiled, picking up her pen, and signed the official court order with a flourish.

"Emergency guardianship granted," Judge Delgado ruled, striking her gavel. "Court is adjourned."
