Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

While Martha recovered and the children settled into their new reality, the legal fallout from the crimes committed against them continued to unfold with ruthless speed.
In a high-security interrogation room at the Manhattan District Attorney's office, Brenda Wilson sat across from Assistant District Attorney Sarah Lin.
Brenda looked haggard. Her fancy coat was gone, replaced by a grey orange jumpsuit, her hair unwashed, her makeup smeared. Across the table sat her public defender, who looked thoroughly exhausted.
"Mrs. Wilson," DA Lin said, sliding a thick stack of financial documents across the table. "We have completed our audit of your accounts. In addition to the grand larceny charge for stealing Martha Reynolds' pension funds, we have uncovered three additional cases of elder fraud involving residents in your former building."
"I... I was going to pay them back!" Brenda stammered, her voice shrill with panic. "I was just holding the money for them!"
"You were holding three hundred thousand dollars in offshore accounts?" DA Lin asked, raising an eyebrow. "Furthermore, the insurance company representing Noah’s biological mother’s estate has filed formal federal wire fraud charges against you for attempting to claim a minor's policy using forged guardianship papers."
"It was Arthur Briggs' idea!" Brenda pointed her finger wildly. "My lawyer! He told me we could split the payout!"
"Mr. Briggs was disbarred two hours ago," DA Lin replied flatly. "And he just signed a full cooperation plea agreement implicating you as the mastermind of the entire scheme."
Brenda sat back in her chair, her eyes wide with terror as the full weight of her reality slammed down upon her. There was no wealthy fiancée to rescue her, no legal loophole to exploit, and no helpless children left to intimidate.
"What... what am I looking at?" Brenda whispered, her throat dry.
"With your prior record and the multiple counts of grand larceny, elder abuse, wire fraud, and child endangerment," DA Lin said coldly, closing the file, "you are looking at fifteen to twenty-two years in a state penitentiary without the possibility of parole for the first twelve."
"No... please!" Brenda cried out, bursting into frantic tears. "I'll give the money back! I'll apologize to the girl! I'll apologize to the old woman!"

"It's too late for apologies, Mrs. Wilson," DA Lin said, standing up and signaling to the guard at the door. "The trial begins next month. And Mr. William Parker has personally ensured that every top forensic accountant in the state is assisting our prosecution team."
As the heavy steel door slammed shut behind Brenda Wilson, ending her reign of greed forever, miles away on Park Avenue, a very different kind of future was being built.
