Chapter 3 - The Broken Link

While the elite of Manhattan drank champagne in the Grand Ballroom, a very different kind of meeting was taking place in a secure holding room of the Federal Building downtown.

Dr. Ronald Mercer, a prestigious forensic dentist whose reputation had once been spotless, sat at a steel table. His expensive wool coat was wrinkled, his tie was askew, and his hands shook violently as he reached for a paper cup of water.

Marcus Vance stood in the corner of the room, his arms crossed over his chest, his shadow stretching long against the cinderblock wall. Beside him stood Special Agent Sarah Miller of the FBI's public corruption division.

"I didn't have a choice," Mercer whimpered, his voice echoing in the small room. "You don't understand who Evelyn Ashford is. She’s a monster. She had files on me... my gambling debts, my offshore accounts. She said if I didn't help her, she would ruin my career and have my license revoked by morning."

"So you helped her fake a death," Agent Miller said, her voice cold as ice. "You took the dental records of a Jane Doe from the county morgue—a woman whose body was burned beyond recognition in an unrelated highway accident—and you entered Lena Ashford’s name into the database. You signed the official coroner's report."

"I... I didn't know she was going to kidnap her!" Mercer cried, slamming his hands on the table. "I thought she was just helping Lena disappear! Evelyn told me Lena wanted out of the marriage, that she was willing to take a cash settlement and leave the country! I didn't know she was holding her hostage in that cabin!"

"You knew enough to accept a two-million-dollar wire transfer from a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands," Vance said, stepping forward. He tossed a stack of printed bank records onto the table. "This account is directly tied to the Ashford Foundation charity fund. You took money meant for pediatric cancer research to cover your roulette debts in Atlantic City."

Mercer buried his face in his hands, letting out a pathetic, dry sob. "Please... please, you have to protect me. If Evelyn finds out I’m talking, she’ll have me killed. She has connections with people... dangerous people."

"The only way you get protection, Dr. Mercer, is if you give us everything," Agent Miller said, leaning over the table, her face inches from his. "We need the exact addresses, the names of the guards she hired, and the authorization codes for the offshore accounts. We need the physical evidence that connects Evelyn Ashford directly to the kidnapping of Lena Ashford and her infant daughter."

Mercer looked up, his eyes wild with terror. He swallowed hard, his throat clicking in the silence of the room.

"The guards... they’re a private security firm called 'Blackwood Solutions,'" Mercer whispered. "But they aren't real security. They’re mercenaries. The man in charge is Marcus—Evelyn’s driver. He handles the payments. They keep a logbook at the cabin... a physical logbook of everyone who enters and leaves. Evelyn made them keep it to ensure no one was slacking off. She’s obsessive about control."

"And the baby?" Vance asked, his voice hardening. "Did Evelyn know Lena was pregnant when she had her taken?"

"No," Mercer said, shaking his head frantically. "She found out three months into the captivity. Marcus told her. Evelyn was furious. She said the child was an 'unauthorized variable.' She wanted to terminate the pregnancy, but the doctor she hired refused to do it because it was too late. So she decided to keep the baby as leverage. She told Lena that if she ever tried to escape, the baby would 'disappear' into an illegal adoption ring in Eastern Europe."

Vance turned to Agent Miller, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle jumped in his cheek.

"We have enough," Vance said, his voice deadly quiet. "Get the arrest warrants signed. I want the tactical units ready. We’re going to end this tonight."
