Chapter 8 - The Cleansing of Ashford

With Evelyn’s conviction a certainty, the massive task of cleaning up Ashford Holdings began.

The board had appointed me as the permanent CEO, and my first act was to systematically dismantle the corrupt power structures my mother had established over the last two decades.

I stood in the corner office on the fiftieth floor of the Ashford Tower, looking out over the city skyline.

The heavy, dark mahogany furniture my mother had insisted on was gone, replaced by light, open spaces designed by Lena’s old architectural firm.

"Daniel."

Julian, the young secretary who had once served my mother, stood by the door, holding a stack of termination notices.

"Are these the final ones?" I asked.

"Yes, sir," Julian said, his voice trembling slightly. "Every executive who was complicit in your mother’s offshore transfers has been terminated. The compliance committee has finalized the audits, and we’ve fully cooperated with the SEC regarding the charity fund discrepancies."

"Thank you, Julian," I said. "And what about you?"

Julian looked down at his shoes. "I... I understand if you want me to leave, sir. I was her secretary. I should have seen what she was doing."

"You were twenty-two years old, Julian," I said, walking over to him and placing a hand on his shoulder. "She terrified you. But when the time came, you didn't destroy the records. You kept the duplicate server files that allowed us to find the video of the cabin. You’re a good man, Julian. I want you to stay. As my assistant."

Julian looked up, his eyes shining with relief. "Thank you, sir. I won't let you down."

The door to the office opened, and Lena walked in, carrying a large cardboard box filled with architectural blueprints.

She was wearing a simple, elegant cream-colored pantsuit, and her hair had grown out into a chic, soft bob. The color had returned to her cheeks, and the hollow, haunted look in her eyes had been replaced by the bright, sharp intelligence I had fallen in love with.

"Am I interrupting?" she asked, a warm smile playing on her lips.

"Never," I said, gesturing for Julian to leave.

As the doors closed, Lena walked over to the drafting table in the corner and began unrolling her designs.

"These are the plans for the new community center in Brooklyn," she said, her fingers tracing the lines of the building. "The board approved the funding this morning. It’s going to be built entirely from sustainable materials, and we’re going to name it after your father."

I walked over to her, wrapping my arms around her waist from behind and resting my chin on her shoulder.

"He would have loved this, Lena," I said, looking at the drawings. "He always wanted Ashford to build things that actually helped people, not just luxury condos for billionaires."

"We’re going to rebuild this company, Daniel," she said, turning in my arms to face me. "Not on greed, not on fear. But on family."

"Starting with us," I said, kissing her gently, the taste of her sweet and familiar, a constant reminder of the miracle of her return.
