Chapter 7 - Unraveling the Trust

The next three weeks were a whirlwind of legal filings, police depositions, and national news headlines.
The arrest of Arthur Vance sent shockwaves through the financial world. As federal agents raided Arthur’s private offices and home estate, they uncovered a massive web of corruption that stretched back three decades.
It turned out Arthur had systematically embezzled over two hundred million dollars from the Warren family trust while framing various household employees and business associates—including Florence and Mary—to cover his tracks.
Dr. Pamela Ortiz lost her medical license and faced federal charges for her illegal participation in the genetic theft scheme, though her full cooperation with prosecutors kept her out of maximum-security prison.
Jocelyn Cooper, who had been kept heavily medicated in a private clinic in Europe by Arthur’s associates to keep her from interfering, was located by international authorities and brought back to the United States to receive proper medical treatment. When questioned, Jocelyn willingly signed away all legal parental claims to baby Dexter, admitting she had been terrified of Arthur and had only agreed to the procedure under extreme coercion.
In a quiet conference room at the Multnomah County Courthouse, Spencer sat beside his newly appointed legal team, reviewing the finalized DNA and estate documents.
Casey, the child welfare worker, sat across from him, holding a thick folder.
"The DNA results are absolute, Mr. Warren," Casey said, sliding the white papers across the table. "Dexter is ninety-nine point nine percent your biological son. And Charlee’s maternity records confirm that her mother, Mary, was indeed the legal daughter of Richard Warren."
"Which means Charlee is my biological niece," Spencer said, reading the crisp black ink on the page.
"And under the revised family trust terms," Casey added with a warm smile, "both children are primary legal heirs to the entire estate. But more importantly... the state has reviewed your application for permanent legal adoption and custody."
Spencer looked up from the papers, his breath catching in his throat. "And?"

Casey closed her folder. "Given your full cooperation, your financial stability, and the evident emotional bond between you and the children, the judge has approved full, permanent legal guardianship for both Dexter and Charlee. They are officially your children now, Spencer."
Spencer sat back in his chair, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the city below. The heavy weight that had rested on his chest for his entire life—the shadow of his father's cold legacy—seemed to lift entirely, carried away by the clear summer sky.
