Chapter 3 - The Midnight Pursuit

The rain was coming down in sheets now, turning the highway into a shimmering ribbon of black asphalt reflecting the frantic red and blue strobes of two unmarked police cruisers leading Elijah’s customized Maybach through the deserted industrial district toward the municipal airfield.

Inside the car, the atmosphere was suffocating.

Elijah sat in the driver’s seat, his knuckles white as he gripped the leather steering wheel, his foot pressed hard against the accelerator. The dashboard display glowed at ninety-five miles per hour. He hadn't spoken a single word since they left the hospital parking lot. The realization that his own blinding arrogance had invited a sociopath into his home—and nearly killed his son in the process—had burned away every trace of the untouchable billionaire he used to be.

In the passenger seat, Naomi stared out the rain-streaked window, her phone pressed to her ear as she spoke in a low, precise voice with Detective Vance.

"Yes, Marcus, the charter flight is a Gulfstream G450 registered under a shell corporation called Apex Holdings," Naomi confirmed into the phone. "Cassandra set up that corporate veil three months ago. She has the bearer bonds, and she likely has physical samples of the Vanguard compounds in her carry-on luggage."

“We’ve already dispatched highway patrol to lock down Perimeter Gate Four,” Vance’s voice crackled through the speaker over the blare of sirens. “Air traffic control has grounded all outbound private departures. But she’s slippery, Naomi. If she reaches the tarmac before our units converge, she could slip into the maintenance hangars.”

"We’re two minutes out," Naomi said. She hung up the phone and turned her gaze toward Elijah. "Keep your eyes on the road. Don't do anything reckless. Let the police handle the perimeter."

"She tried to kill my boy," Elijah growled, his voice vibrating with a low, primal rage. "She sat at my kitchen table every morning, smiling at Toby while she measured poison into his juice. I’m going to look her in the eye when they put the cuffs on her."

"Just make sure you don't do anything that gives her high-priced defense attorney a legal loophole," Naomi replied coldly.

The Maybach surged around a final sharp curve, tires hissing against the flooded asphalt, and the bright floodlights of the municipal airfield came into view through the gloom.

A high chain-link fence topped with barbed wire stretched out on either side of the main security gate. Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the wet tarmac where a sleek, twin-engine private jet sat idling on the runway, its turbine engines whining loudly against the storm, preparing for takeoff.

Beside the rolling gate, a silver luxury sedan—Cassandra’s personal Mercedes—was parked at an angle, its driver’s side door standing wide open.

Elijah slammed on the brakes, sending the Maybach into a controlled slide that came to a halt right behind Cassandra’s abandoned car. Before the vehicle had even settled, Elijah shoved the door open and leaped out into the freezing rain.

"Elijah, wait!" Naomi yelled, grabbing her coat and throwing her door open as well.

Sirens wailed in the distance as two police cruisers rounded the perimeter fence, their high-beams cutting through the rain to illuminate the tarmac. But Cassandra was already moving.

Clutching an expensive leather overnight bag in one hand and a rolling suitcase in the other, she was sprinting across the open tarmac toward the pulsing red boarding stairs of the Gulfstream jet. Her blonde hair whipped wildly in the wind, and her designer trench coat billowed behind her like the cape of a defeated villain.

"Cassandra!" Elijah’s voice roared across the open airfield, cutting cleanly through the roar of the jet turbines.

Cassandra froze mid-stride. She turned her head, her eyes widening in sheer panic as she saw Elijah charging across the wet concrete toward her, followed closely by armed police officers streaming out of the patrol cars with weapons drawn.

For a second, panic flickered across her face. Then, a cold, desperate calculation took over. She dropped her rolling suitcase, reached into her coat pocket, and pulled out a small, metallic object before continuing her mad dash toward the aircraft door.

"She’s got a burner phone or a remote detonator!" Naomi shouted, sprinting behind Elijah while waving frantically to the approaching officers. "Stop her!"
